A bride-to-be has slammed her best friend for ‘stealing her spotlight’ when wedding dress shopping – and now she is reconsidering how to involve her in her special day
For most brides, trying on wedding dresses is one of their favourite parts of planning their special day – but it doesn’t always go as expected. That’s exactly what one bride-to-be came to learn after her best friend “stole the spotlight” while wedding dress shopping, turning the occasion into her own personal photo shoot.
Taking to Reddit, the bride’s sister explained how the friend took over the appointment – and even went so far as to try on the bride’s gown “just for fun”. She said on Reddit: “It started off fine my sister had picked out a few gorgeous dresses to try on, and the consultant was helping her narrow them down. We had the usual group there: me (her sister), our mum, her maid of honour (her best friend of 10+ years), and two other bridesmaids.
“Everyone was supposed to get their turn later to try on a few bridesmaid dress options too. But then, things got… weird.
“When my sister finally found the dress the one that made her cry happy tears her best friend suddenly asked the consultant if she could ‘just see how it looks on her too’, since they’re the same size.
“Everyone thought she was joking at first, but nope. She literally took my sister’s dream dress off the rack and went to try it on.”
However, it didn’t stop there as the friend started picking out two other bridal gowns to try on “just for fun” while everyone else moved onto the bridesmaid dresses.
She said: “While my sister sat there trying to stay polite, her ‘best friend’ came out in full bridal looks, twirling in front of the mirror, taking pictures, and gushing about how beautiful she looked in them.
“She was posing, talking about how ‘this one fits like a glove’ and “maybe I’ll just get married before you do!” complete with fake laughs that made the whole thing even worse.
“This moment literally felt like out a movie where the mean girl is doing everything in her power to make things about herself.
“When it was finally time for the bridesmaids to try on the dresses, she only tried one of the three we picked out, then said she was ‘too tired’ and went back to scrolling through the photos of herself in the wedding gowns.”
She says her sister handled the situation with “more grace” than she would have done – but could tell she was upset by the situation. She added: “It was her day her moment to shine and somehow her best friend turned it into a competition.
“Now my sister’s unsure if she even wants her as maid of honour anymore, but she feels guilty for feeling that way.
“Personally, I think the guilt should belong to the friend who couldn’t handle letting someone else be the centre of attention for a single day.”
Commenting on her post, one user said: “It’s she’s like this shopping for a bridal gown, imagine what she’s going to be like at the wedding.”
Another user added: “The consultant should have told her no that she would need a separate appointment.
“It’s part of her job to maintain control of the appointments. Someone, anyone should have shut her down. ‘No, you can’t try on the dream dress and take pictures. What are thinking?'”
