The Met Office warned snow could fall in parts of the UK next week

The first snows of winter are predicted to blanket more than 20 areas next week as Arctic conditions batter Britain. Our interactive map reveals exactly when snow is expected to hit your local area.

The Met Office forecasts a dramatic change in weather patterns following this weekend’s torrential downpours, stating there’s a “reasonable chance” of snowfall as polar air engulfs the UK. Weather experts predict high pressure will dominate weekend conditions before shifting southwards towards the Azores, ushering in bitter northerly winds.

As this system moves across Britain, the Met Office cautions that temperatures will plummet and winter-like weather may arrive, potentially bringing snow to parts of the country.

Thermometers could drop to -4C across sections of Scotland during the early hours of Monday (November 17). The Met Office anticipates this chilly period will then spread nationwide, with temperatures dropping ‘several degrees’ below seasonal averages.

Overnight readings may plunge to -2C across the North West of England on Tuesday, with widespread nocturnal lows between 0-2C across central England and Scotland on Wednesday. WX Charts has even suggested that London could see some flurries in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Alongside the bitter cold, the Met Office indicates there’s an increasing possibility of sleet and snow, especially over elevated areas and mountainous regions in Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and potentially North Wales.

Towards next week’s conclusion, the Met Office suggested a “widespread wintry spell” could reach the UK, with even southern regions of the country experiencing snowfall. According to forecast site OpenWeather, parts of Scotland and the North East could see snow as early as Monday.

Wales might experience snowfall on Tuesday, with a possibility of it reaching Gloucestershire in the South West. Northern Ireland also stands a chance of witnessing snow by Wednesday.

In a blog post, the Met Office stated: “The probability of snow increases as we move through the period. Friday’s wet weather in the south could bring wintry conditions to the hills of northwest Wales.

“By Sunday and Monday, as colder air digs in, there is a reasonable chance of sleet and snow in northern Scotland, with the risk spreading further south into Northern Ireland, northern England, and North Wales by Tuesday.

“The middle and end of next week could see a more widespread wintry spell if a weather system moves south, with some models suggesting a 20% or greater chance of more than 1cm of snow even in southern parts of the country. Alongside snow, there is also a risk of ice, especially where rain falls onto cold surfaces.”
