A woman was baffled when her pregnant sister sent through a list of prospective baby names for the child she’s due to have in six months and every option was branded a “crime”
A woman is disappointed after receiving a list of baby names her pregnant sister is considering for her unborn child. Names carry a lot of significance and while it shouldnât be the case, having an unusual or bizarre name can lead to preconceived notions and judgement.
Prospective parents have a difficult decision to make when it comes to choosing a name for their baby, as whatever they land on has to suit a sweet, innocent infant just as well because it must suit an adult making their way in the world. Names are subjective, of course, and what one person loves, another may hate so itâs quite the challenge to choose something thatâll be universally appreciated.
Most people hope to ensure they choose something that wonât hinder their child, swerving options that are potentially embarrassing or offensive, or difficult to spell or pronounce.
This isnât always the case, though and, in some instances, a nameâs perceived âuniquenessâ is the most important consideration.
This can lead to some babies being given nonsensical names that flout the rules of phonics, or traditional monikers which have been purposefully misspelled in a bid to make them seem more original than they really are.
On Reddit, many of these names are mocked in the subreddit, Tragedeigh.
The groupâs title mocks the ongoing trend of parents warping the spelling of established names and words to create a âuniqueâ name, even though the pronunciation remains the same.
The word âtragedeighâ is a deliberate, satirical misspelling of the word âtragedyâ, with many members flocking to the subreddit to share names theyâve spotted online or encountered in real life.
One woman was keen to share her sisterâs choices, which led to much mockery online. The woman simply titled her post: âMy sister is about to be a mum in six months…”
And added: âThen she sent me this…” alongside a screenshot of the notes app with a list of the offending names.
The list included: Bradleigh; a revamped version of Bradley; Teemoteigh, which appears to be a misspelling of Timothy; Laurreleigh, which could be Laura-Leigh or Lorelai; Kimberleigh instead of Kimberley; Sammentah, which appears to be Samantha; Sthanlleigh, which seems to be a bizarre spelling of Stanley; Kymm; Shammie; Thymm, which could be Tim or Thyme; and Keunddeigh.
In the comments, fellow Reddit users were keen to share their thoughts.
One person said: âTell her she needs to cut it out or youâll pass a law that sheâs not allowed to have sex anymore. Dear God, what a crime against vowels.â
Another said: âWhat is her deal with the THs where they arenât supposed to be but gone where they are.”
A third quipped: âI think we need to buy her a subscription to âhooked on phonicsâ.”
To which, someone jokingly replied: âFaunnix.”
Another also joked: âCanât believe sheâll be a mum in just Csyx Meuxnthsâ.
Someone else asked: âIs Sthanlleigh meant to be Stanley? Also what is Keunddeigh? The last time I was this confused I was looking at Welsh names, not tragedeighs.â
And another added: âKimberleigh is literally the only semi normal one in that list [sobbing face emojis] the rest are a crime against my ability to read.”
