A home cook has shared a simple hack to make cabbage taste delicious — and better than boiled

Cabbage, one of the most affordable and overlooked vegetables in our fridges, is often boiled by many, which unfortunately strips it of its nutrients and leaves it tasting rather bland.

However, cooking enthusiast Mimi Harrison has shared a more flavourful method on her recipe blog Beat the Budget. She said: “Gone are the days of boiling cabbage like your granny. Instead, try out this deliciously easy sauteed savoy cabbage recipe.

“The simplicity and flavour of this exquisite side dish will have people requesting it at every meal.”

She believes that the secret to enhancing the taste of cabbage, or “any vegetable”, is to sauté it with butter.

Mimi further explained: “Using butter helps cook and crisp up the cabbage, caramelising the outside, and adding buttery flavour.”, reports the Express.

For those wanting to elevate their cabbage dish “over the top”, she also suggests incorporating pistachios for added texture.

Sautéed savoy cabbage

Ingredients

  • One head of savoy cabbage, thinly sliced
  • Three cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
  • 50g of salted butter
  • 50g of salted pistachios
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • Salt and pepper
  • One teaspoon of red pepper flakes

Method

Start by melting the butter in a large pan over medium heat. Then, add the savoy cabbage to the pan.

Season with salt and pepper and sauté for 10 to 15 minutes. In the last two minutes, stir in the red pepper flakes, half the pistachios and garlic.

Once they’re soft and fully cooked, switch off the heat and squeeze in the lemon juice. Give it a good stir, then dish it up with a sprinkle of black pepper, the leftover pistachios, and a smidgen of salt.
