With the number of working royals dwindling, the Prince and Princess of Wales are showing their eldest son the ropes to take on a bigger role within the Firm

With the number of senior working royals dwindling over the years, the Firm is looking to the next generation of the royal family to take on a greater responsibility, with Prince George leading the charge.

The eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales joined his mother, Princess Kate, at the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall last week to honour the war dead, with one royal expert believing we could be seeing much more of the future king as he grows up. Over the years, 12-year-old George has appeared at a handful of royal events alongside his parents, as he prepares to one day ascend the throne.

George stepped out alongside William at the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal match between Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain in Paris back in April. Just one month later, the young prince joined William and Kate at a veteran’s tea party at Buckingham Palace as part of VE Day commemorations, with the appearance being praised by royal commentators and fans alike.

Now, with the notable absence of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and Prince Harry to take up royal engagements, royal expert Richard Eden believes we could be seeing a lot more of George in the years to come.

He told the Daily Mail: “What we are seeing now is a new royal in training, Prince George. At the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, we saw his mother, Catherine, gently leading the way and really showing how Prince George could handle public engagements in the future.

“It’s an event of remembrance, and it’s one which is very close to the hearts of the Royal Family, also one which Prince George is very interested in.”

He continued: “We saw him earlier this year, meeting veterans at Buckingham Palace when there was a tea party to celebrate the 70th anniversary of VE Day. Even though he is very young, he managed to have conversations with these veterans, and you could see he was taking a real interest.”

The royal expert added that Kate and William are “carefully introducing” their son, who is second in line to the throne, into royal life, saying that we will continue to see George “at a lot more of these types of events”.

The future King is settling into life with his sister, Princess Charlotte, and brother, Prince Louis, at the family’s new residence, Forest Lodge. George recently started his final year of primary education at Lambrook, with the young prince heading off to secondary school in 2026.

While George may be getting more royal responsibility in the coming years, one thing he may not be getting is a mobile phone , as Prince William admitted the topic has caused “tension” in the Wales household.

During a candid interview while in Brazil for the Earthshot Prize awards, the Prince of Wales revealed how hard it has been to tackle the issue of technology with their growing children. He said: “It is really hard. Our children don’t have phones.

“When George moves on to secondary school, maybe he’ll have one with limited access. It’s getting to the point where it is becoming a bit of a tense issue. But I think he understands why, we communicate why we don’t think it’s right.”
