Tesco’s Christmas tree branding has sparked debate between shoppers

Tesco has been experiencing a mixed reaction from shoppers after an X user shared that the supermarket had rebranded its Christmas trees as “evergreen trees”. The 6.5ft “Luxury Evergreen Tree” is currently retailing for ÂŁ60 on Tesco’s website and within stores.

Susan Hall, Conservative leader and member of the London Assembly, took to social media, posting on X: “Wretched ridiculous nonsense, call it what it is, it’s a Christmas tree. There, I said it out loud. I’m fed up with all this woke stupidity.”

Olympic medallist Sharron Davies also weighed in, describing it as “a bit silly” on the platform: “It’s a Christmas tree that people put up at Christmas to celebrate Christmas!”

Another user branded the supermarket with political correctness and urged the public to boycott Tesco, whilst some users began questioning whether Tesco was taking offence at the Christian celebration reports the Express. However, not all shoppers agreed, with some Reddit users pointing out that there are many products at Tesco that do have Christmas branding.

One Reddit user said: “Everyone already knows it is a Christmas tree, the name has changed because the fake trees have gotten so good you might be buying one that mimics a pine or a spruce. That is therefore a much more descriptive and useful name than ‘Christmas tree’.”

Another added: “Private company, they can do what they like. I can also refuse to buy it. Things really don’t have to be any more difficult than that.”

Tesco informed the Express: “We are proudly celebrating Christmas at Tesco and have a range of real and artificial Christmas trees in store as part of a wide selection of Christmas products to help our customers celebrate Christmas this year.”

They added: “This product is described as an ‘evergreen tree’ to make it clear which type of Christmas tree is inside the box and help customers to distinguish between the many Christmas Trees in the range. Elsewhere on the box it is clearly marked that this product is part of our Christmas category.”

On the Tesco website, customers can still locate other Christmas trees labelled as such, along with other festive essentials under the Christmas tab. Some of the products still marketed as “Christmas trees” are sold by Tesco and range from ÂŁ5.19 to ÂŁ159.99.

Tesco faced similar backlash in 2021, when they came under fire for selling a 7ft-tall plastic “evergreen tree” for ÂŁ80 without mentioning Christmas.
