Meghan Markle’s ex-husband is said to have had a telling response to the news that she was dating Prince Harry and whether or not they would walk down the aisle together

Before meeting Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was married to American film producer Trevor Engelson.

The pair were married from 2011 until 2014, and he has rarely commented on Meghan’s life since their split. But he did have had a surprising three-word response to the news she was dating the prince in 2016, according to friend and ex Bethenny Frankel.

The Real Housewives of New York City alum briefly spoke about Meghan and Trevor during a recent appearance on “The Toast” podcast, and said when she first met Trevor he told her “his ex was a woman from a show called ‘Suits'”.

“I didn’t know what the show was,” the Skinnygirl creator recalled. “I didn’t know the woman. Months later, I see pictures showing Harry’s dating someone and texted him: ‘Is this your ex?'”

When Trevor confirmed that Meghan was the Duke of Sussex’s new girlfriend, Bethenny asked, “Do you think she’s going to close?” And she said the 49-year-old tellingly replied, “Oh, she’ll close.”

Bethenny reiterated, “I don’t want to get into more about that, but he was like, ‘She’ll close.'” And the former actress certainly did ‘close’, with Harry proposing in November 2017.

Since splitting with Meghan, Trevor has gone on to marry nutritionist and multi-million dollar heiress Tracey Kurland.

The couple welcomed their first daughter, Ford Grace Engelson in August 2020, followed by Sienna Lee Engelson, who arrived in November 2021. Earlier this year, they had a son called Logan Stanford Engelson.

In the book Meghan, A Hollywood Princess, Princess Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton claimed that Meghan and Trevor met at a dive bar when Meghan was starting out as an actress, nabbing a small sitcom role and joining Deal or No Deal.

Then she got her break in Suits, which was filmed in New York and then Canada, meaning she would be based away from her then-new fiancé. Meghan and Trevor thought “the sacrifice was going to be worth it”, Morton writes, noting that it was just a month before the wedding when Suits was renewed for a second season, confirming that the long-distance nature of their romance would continue.

The duo tied the knot in 2011, in what a bridesmaid recalls to Morton was a “moving wedding”, complete with the couple writing their own vows. Then Meghan flew back to Canada after the celebration for filming – and it wasn’t long before “cracks began to appear in their marriage”.

Meghan announced the end of their two-year marriage in the summer of 2013, and they officially divorced a year later. But the separation was “totally out of the blue” for Trevor, according to Morton.

“Trevor went from cherishing Meghan to, as one friend observed, ‘feeling like he was a piece of something stuck to the bottom of her shoe’,” writes Morton.
