Cold temperatures and damp bathrooms are creating the perfect envrionment for silverfish
As temperatures plummet, countless households nationwide will switch on their heating systems, which will subsequently boost humidity levels within homes, particularly in bathrooms.
This creates ideal conditions for silverfish invasions. These tiny, silvery-blue creatures flourish in damp environments, including bathrooms and cellars.
They can become quite troublesome pests since they consume starches and sugars present in paper, garments, and stored food items, causing damage to numerous household belongings.
Bearing this in mind, specialists at London-based waste clearance firm Clear It Waste have offered advice for tackling silverfish infestations, including one essential task you should perform after stepping out of the shower or bath.
Air out bathroom mats
Recent research by Cleaning Matters revealed that one million Britons have never cleaned their bathroom mat, whilst an additional 6.29 million delay washing it for two months or longer.
Nevertheless, your bathroom mat serves as a prime location for silverfish to flourish, being a moist spot within a humid environment.
Instead of leaving your bath mat soggy on the floor, it’s advised to air-dry it following each use. It should also be washed regularly to maintain cleanliness and freshness.
Control moisture
Managing moisture levels in bathrooms, and throughout the house generally, represents an excellent method for preventing silverfish infestations.
Clear It Waste spokesperson Josh Clarke explained: “A great way to manage moisture is by using a dehumidifier. It works to remove excess water from the air and prevent moisture buildup. To ensure it is used effectively, place it in areas prone to humidity, such as bathrooms and kitchens.”
Sort out leaking pipes and vents
Dripping pipes will create a dark, damp, humid and wet environment, which is especially appealing to silverfish. Take some time to inspect all of the plumbing in your home, and repair any that are dripping.
Josh adds: “It is also essential to ensure any vents are properly repaired and working well to minimise the chances of a silverfish infestation.
“Well-functioning vents are important for controlling condensation levels in bathrooms, as the more condensation that builds, the more humidity levels increase.”
Utilise deterrents
There are a number of deterrents you can take advantage of when it comes to avoiding silverfish. One common method is using lavender or peppermint oil.
Simply dab some around any sinks, drains, toilets and pipes to deter them from these areas. Additionally, consider using silica gel packets in small spaces, such as drawers, to absorb moisture.
