An extraordinarily rare bottle of Dom Pérignon Vintage 1961 champagne will go under the hammer on December 11

An ‘extraordinarily rare’ bottle of Dom Pérignon champagne, served at the iconic wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, is set to go under the hammer and could fetch a staggering £70k. The Royal couple exchanged vows in a grand ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral in 1981, an event that was dubbed the ‘wedding of the century’.

The magnum – a Vintage 1961 – was ‘produced in extremely limited numbers’ for the occasion. The bottle is now up for grabs at Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen with an estimated price tag of between €67,000 and €80,000 (£58,870 and £70,293).

Thomas Rosendahl, head of wine, said: “Vintage 1961 is one of Dom Pérignon’s most coveted vintages. This special edition was produced in extremely limited numbers and exclusively for the official festivities and selected guests of the royal wedding.

“This is a champagne created for a historic royal occasion, making it extraordinarily rare. It represents not only a highly esteemed Dom Pérignon vintage but also a unique piece of cultural history.

“We expect strong international interest from both established wine collectors and royal memorabilia enthusiasts.”

Prince Charles and Princess Diana tied the knot on July 29, 1981, captivating an estimated global television audience of 750 million people.

The service took place at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, followed by a wedding breakfast and ceremony at Buckingham Palace. However, their marriage was not meant to last, with the couple separating in 1992 before officially divorcing in 1996. The champagne will be auctioned off on December 11.
