Home cleaning expert and author, Lynsey Crombie has revealed her ‘sock hanging hack’ that is ‘simple and effective’ and will save you money on your energy bills
If you’re someone who prefers to dry socks on radiators rather than popping them in the tumble dryer, one home expert suggests that this habit might be causing more damage than good to your electricity bill. Self-proclaimed ‘Queen of Clean’, Lynsey Crombie, a regular face on ITV shows This Morning and Good Morning Britain, has a “hack” she believes is quick, easy to implement, and crucially, will save you money.
“Grab a coat hanger and a handful of pegs, clip your socks on and hang them up perfect for drying indoors and outdoors,” she encouraged in a TikTok video. “[It’s] simple, effective, and super cheap!”
Lynsey demonstrated the process in her short clip, which concluded with her hanging four pairs of socks per coat hanger from the upper frame of her shower.
Meanwhile, an expert from Which? strongly advises against using radiator heat to dry any clothes. He explained in a video: “Radiators circulate warm air around the room, so if the heating is on at set to 20 degrees Celsius, your radiators will pump out heat until the room reaches that temperature at which point, the boiler will stop.”
So what’s the issue? Cold and wet clothes act as a “barrier” to the heat, the expert said. As a result, you could find yourself heating your room for a lot longer than necessary.
“While you might end up with dry clothes, you’ll also end up with a colder home and bigger energy bills – and maybe even mould,” the expert warned.
But is there a better alternative? “Place your clothes on an airer near the radiator – it might take longer, but it helps the air to circulate around the room,” the Which? expert instructed.
He also recommended investing in an electric heated airer to accelerate the drying process. “They do work better on smaller loads though,” he concluded. “Or use a tumble dryer.”
Lynsey, meanwhile recently shared another straightforward trick that tackles grease with minimal effort. The ITV presenter encouraged viewers not to dismiss salt as a powerful cleaning agent.
She explained: “Did you know salt isn’t just for cooking? It’s actually an amazing natural cleaner! Salt absorbs grease and liquid, lifts stubborn stains (even red wine), and is mildly antibacterial – making it perfect for soaking kitchen sponges or scrubbing chopping boards.”
In her demonstration, Lynsey simply scattered a liberal quantity of table salt into her kitchen sink, before pouring boiling water from the kettle on top. She described salt as “brilliant” for soaking up liquids and grease.
The cleaning expert concluded: “Simple, eco-friendly, and already in your cupboard – what’s not to love?” Lynsey’s followers responded enthusiastically to the tip, with one commenting: “Love cleaning with this salt, only have this one in the home for cleaning.”
