Italian national, Fabio Farati was left feeling ripped off after visiting a pizzeria in New York City and failing to spot the true cost of a slice in the shop’s signage

An Italian man who jetted to New York City to test whether the Big Apple’s pizzas match up to those back home was left gobsmacked by one element of the experience – albeit not the flavour. Fabio Farati filmed himself on TikTok with his mate after splashing out what he believed was a dollar on a Margherita slice.

“For $1 it’s not bad,” he announced, only for his companion to reveal it actually set him back $1.50. “It’s $1,” Fabio protested, before spotting the takeaway’s storefront had cunningly displayed the slices with a giant ‘$1′ sign alongside a minuscule ’50’ next to it.

Visibly stunned, Fabio examined his receipt and cried out: “That’s a scam! You cannot put the 50 that small!”

It prompted his pal to quip: “Welcome to New York, man!”

“I didn’t even realise it, vabbè [alright],” admitted Fabio. “It’s not bad to be $1.50, but it sounds different now, huh? My parents are not going to see the 50! Vabbè, there’s crisis.”

Fabio’s footage has since become a viral sensation, racking up 3.5 million views within a fortnight.

“Small print has always felt like a scam to me,” one TikTok user commented in agreement.

Others highlighted that numerous NYC pizza joints previously sold slices for a quid, but soaring living expenses led to a citywide price surge.

“There’s no more $1 pizza,” a second person explained. “The price went up, but they’re not going to spend money for a new sign, so that’s the only other option.”

A third pointed out: “It definitely used to be a $1 slice place… but when prices went up they didn’t want to pay for a whole new sign and just popped the small 50 next to it.”

Whilst a fourth TikTok user agreed: “It looks like it was $1 for a long time but they had to raise the price due to inflation. It would have cost to much to replace the entire sign so those stick on numbers were the easiest way to fix it. They are small because that’s all that would fit.”

Today (November 27) marks the 99th anniversary of the Thanksgiving tradition, Macy’s Day Parade and a host of musicians are set to take centre stage.

The parade will showcase renowned artists including Ciara, Busta Rhymes, Lil John, Teyana Taylor.

Additionally, Shaggy is scheduled to appear on Jennie-O’s Big Turkey Spectacular float with a reggae performance. Whilst Darlene Love will deliver some R&B on Balsam Hill’s Deck the Halls float.
