A Barking shop owner has been hit with a £1,315 court bill after his store’s pavement display was found extending 50cm beyond its permitted boundary.
Poundsave Superstore, on Ripple Road, breached its street trading licence during a proactive patrol on 18 March 2025, when council officers discovered the display spilling around 50cm past the authorised limit. The council said the obstruction reduced space for pedestrians and posed a potential hazard in the busy town-centre area.
Shop owner Mr Husaini had been given the chance to avoid prosecution after a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice was issued on 25 March. He had 14 days to pay and was sent several reminders warning that non-payment would lead to court action. When the final reminder expired, the penalty was withdrawn and the case moved to prosecution.
At Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on 4 November 2025, he pleaded guilty to breaching street trading conditions. Magistrates imposed a £439 fine, a £176 victim surcharge and £700 in costs, totalling £1,315, payable within 28 days.
Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said the case showed the council would not hesitate to act: “Street trading rules are in place to keep our pavements safe and accessible for everyone… Most [businesses] do comply but action will be taken against those who don’t.”
