Iconic paintings including the Mona Lisa and Girl with a Pearl Earring have been reimagined using AI to show how they’d look with beauty trends from the 1990s, 2000s and today
Iconic artworks have been given a contemporary twist to depict how the subjects would appear if they were painted in today’s era. The Mona Lisa, Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Birth of Venus have been reimagined using some of the most popular beauty trends from the past 30 years.
The project saw The Birth of Venus, crafted by Sandro Botticelli in the 1480s, receive a classic 1990s makeover, complete with body glitter, nail art and the iconic small butterfly clips in her hair. Meanwhile, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa was transported into the early 2000s, with skinny brows, chunky highlights and frosted eyeshadow.
Lastly, Girl with a Pearl Earring, painted by Johannes Vermeer in the 1660s, has been updated with today’s modern look featuring bold brows, dewy skin and nude-coloured lips.
These classic paintings of some of the most renowned female muses were reimagined by Perfectil, which delved into some of the beauty trends that have come and gone in the three decades since the supplement was launched.
It follows research which revealed smoky eye makeup, the ‘Rachel’ haircut and kohl eyeliner are among the most iconic beauty trends of that time.
A spokesperson from Vitabiotics Perfectil, said: “Some of the trends of the last few decades have been iconic, so we wanted to give some iconic paintings a truly iconic look.
“Had Vermeer, Leonardo da Vinci or any of these old masters been around today, these give some indication how their paintings may have looked differently.
“But we all know a lot of these trends are fleeting and many are no longer at the forefront of beauty – although they may well come back again in 30 years’ time.”
“While these trends come and go, one thing which truly has stood the test of time is the strong link between beauty and wellness from within to ensure a healthy lifestyle and a diet rich in key nutrients,” she adds.
Regarding specific trends, crimson lipstick, winged eyeliner, sculpting and false lashes were amongst the most unforgettable along with some classic looks such as nail art, a blunt bob and glitter eyeshadow. Crimped hair, shiny lip gloss and even blue mascara also made the list.
The research revealed that 51% of the 2,000 women surveyed reckon numerous 1990s and 2000s styles are returning, with 12% hoping dramatic kohl liner, favoured by Traitors presenter Claudia Winkleman, could become fashionable once more.
Back in the day, 22% of people drew their hair and beauty inspiration from TV and films, with an equal number relying on mates. However, according to OnePoll.com data, 27% now turn to social media for their beauty cues.
Moreover, a whopping 69% say their beauty routine is crucial, dedicating over 20 minutes daily to it – that’s an average of two hours and 20 minutes each week.
Over a quarter (26%) even admitted to spending more time on their hair and beauty now than they did in their teenage years.
The spokesperson from Vitabiotics Perfectil added: “Beauty has always been a focus for many, even if the trends they try to replicate and include with their regime may be different now than when the Mona Lisa was first painted.
“The backbone of beauty is – and always has been – good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. The trends we follow will change as we grow and find what works for us externally, but the goodness we consistently put into our bodies will remain a constant.”
