Make-up artist Beth Mellem took to Instagram to show her followers the ‘soft eyeliner’ trick that took 36 years to perfect – and it only takes a matter of seconds
The first signs of ageing are often noticed around our eyes. From fine lines, to dark circles – many of us slather moisturisers and make-up on our faces to conceal these marks.
But one make-up artist claims there’s a simple hack that will give your eyes a more youthful, fresher look – and it takes just a matter of seconds. Beth Mellem, who specialises in wrinkle, scarring and age spot remedies, took to Instagram to show her followers the ‘soft eyeliner’ trick that took 36 years to perfect.
Posting to her page (@bethmellem), she wrote: “The ‘soft’ eyeliner look ages you backwards compared to the dark harsh looking eyeliner! You should give it a try if you haven’t!
“Apply a medium to dark eyeshadow colour along your bottom lashes with a small ended brush. You can gently blend it out a bit if you feel you want a softer look. This gives you an eyeliner look without the dark harsh eyeliner which tends to make our eyes look smaller.”
Beth isn’t the only one to recommend soft eyeliner for a younger look, with Roxie Cosmetics also claiming that bold strokes and colours under the eyes will make you look older. This is largely because they may bring attention to the finer lines and wrinkles in the eye area, making sagging more visible.
“Say goodbye to gothic-looking liner from the teenage years and too dramatic smokey eyes,” experts at the site wrote. “Always aim for the opposite of the ‘black-liner-effect’, and that is to make the eyes pop. Choose an eyeshadow colour that will bring out the natural colour of the eyes.”
If you have blue eyes, experts recommend using a coppery brown shade, while green eyes look more vibrant when accompanied with plums and purples. When these drawing lines, it’s also important ensure they are as thin as possible – going too heavy can us look more tired.
The experts stressed: “Not all eye shapes are the same. Each eye shape either compliments someone’s face or the other way around. Learning to embrace one’s own eyes can help in highlighting them and making them look fabulous. Choose an eyeliner technique that will flatter the eyes and make them stand out.”
Beth Mellem’s post has since been met with countless comments on Instagram, with many users keen to try the soft eyeliner hack for themselves. One person wrote: “I wish I could talk my 57-year-old mother into this. She still does the super thick, heavy black eyeliner all around her eyes.
“I cannot convince [her] that it looks like garbage – I have said it more nicely than that of course.” Another person later chimed in: “I remember doing that for prom and it looked really great.”
