Grime building up quickly on windowsills is a common problem in many homes, but you can eliminate it in just 15 minutes using this simple solution that requires only two items

This one is so easy it basically cleans itself.

Dirt and grime can build up seriously quickly in the tracks and sills of your windows, and left unattended it can cause damage over time that could be really costly to fix. It’s best to clean these awkward spots in your windows pretty regularly to stop any potential damage in its tracks. However, it’s not just the expense of fixing a broken window that you might be facing if you fail to get on top of this task, it can also be damaging to your health – especially if you or anyone in your home suffers from a respiratory condition.

Tackling this area might seem on the surface like it could be tricky or time-consuming, because of the awkward size of window tracks, but it doesn’t need to be. With this expert-approved life hack, all you need is two common household items and in fifteen minutes they’ll work their magic, leaving your windows looking brand new.

One of the easiest ways to clean these awkward spots recommended by John Cutts, an expert from MeandMyGlass, requires only baking soda and a small amount of white vinegar. Simply pour some baking soda onto the affected area and then a little white vinegar on top. The concoction will begin to bubble, and all you need to do is let is “sit for around 15 minutes” before grabbing a damp cloth and giving the windowsill and tracks a wipe down, it should be left gleaming, with only minimal effort on your part.

Baking soda and white vinegar can easily be picked up from your local supermarket. If you prefer buying products online, you can pick up Arm and Hammer Baking Soda (227g) for £3.73 on Amazon and a huge 5l tub of Tropical Sun Royal Sun White Distilled Vinegar for £6.50.

According to the expert, this time of the year is the perfect time to start tackling dirty windowsills and tracks and it’s best not to wait until later in the summer when more grime will have built up. “If left for too long, dirty window tracks can become a real problem. Not only do they make your house look seriously unclean when your windows are open, but they also damage your window over time and can make it harder to open and close.

“If you find your window sticking a lot when you go to open it, you may want to check how clean the tracks are. When window tracks are left for too long it can cause a build-up of dust and allergens and when you open your window this dirt can become airborne which can cause discomfort for those with allergies or asthma.

“Window tracks are an awkward space and they don’t look easy to clean so it’s understandable why people avoid cleaning them,” the expert explains, but he notes that you should get in the habit of doing this every four months or so.
