A parent to be is worried their favourite baby name has been ‘ruined’ because of the links to disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein and they’ve turned to social media to ask for advice
A prospective parent has finally settled on a name for their unborn son, before realising it could have negative connotations for a disgraced celebrity. Writing on social media, the parent-to-be explains how they were keen on the name Harvey for their little one, but is worried people will only think of disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein.
The movie producer, 72, was first arrested on rape and sexual offence charges in 2018 before later being convicted in 2020. The former Hollywood elite was sentenced to 23 years of imprisonment before his rape conviction was recently overturned.
With the former Hollywood producer’s name in the media, the parent-to-be, who doesn’t state their gender, has turned to Reddit for advice: “We’re due in a month, have pretty much landed on Harvey. We love the name! It’s classic without being dated, light, and friendly but also polished.”

However, they then outlined the issue as they continued: “Only issue is the guy everyone thinks of when the name Harvey comes up. It’d be one thing if it was a common name, but seems like for whatever reason the name has faded out over time and the only person anyone is familiar with this name is Harvey Weinstein.”
The post carried on as the original poster tried to reason why they hoped Harvey would still be a suitable name for their son as they wrote: “Our thinking was, even though we don’t know any other Harveys, it’s a fairly conventional name and the association with Weinstein will only continue to fade over time. What do you think? Is the association with a real-life villain a permanent burden, or something insignificant and temporary?”
Others on Reddit shared their views, with many pointing out other Harveys they know of, including Harvey Specter in legal drama Suits and 90s heartthrob Harvey, who was Sabrina’s boyfriend in Sabrina The Teenage Witch. One person shared: “I think of Harvey Specter from Suits first. I don’t think the Weinstein association is that strong anymore and it certainly won’t be for the kid’s generation.” Another added: “I thought of Harvey Specter lol. I think it’s a great name!”
Another person wrote: “I think oh Harvey as in Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s boyfriend lol” with someone else pointing out the same as they posted: “The first two that came to mind for me were the characters in Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Suits. I wouldn’t worry about the association with Weinstein – if you like the name go for it! I seriously doubt that when you introduce your son as ‘Harvey’ anyone will say ‘oh, like Harvey Weinstein?’ Bottom line: if you love the name, go for it!”
Another person pointed out that the Harvey Weinstein connections might just be whilst the disgraced movie mogul is back in the news awaiting a retrial for rape charges. They posted: “Harvey Weinstein was just back in the news yesterday because his conviction in NY was thrown out and he is looking at a retrial there. So, you may get some looks and questions about it, but I honestly don’t think that will last forever. Even if someone does make that association, most people wouldn’t say anything, but just in case there are a few who do, it may be because he is literally going through more legal stuff right now.”
