‘Neighbour parks outside my house even when their driveway is empty – I’m blocked in all day’

A disgruntled homeowner has claimed their neighbour keeps parking outside of their house despite having a driveway of their own – meaning they can’t park outside of their own home

The etiquette around parking can be a sensitive subject.

If you’re lucky enough to have a driveway that you can reliably park in every day, you might not know the struggles the rest of us have to go through when we park our cars on the roadside. For many, it feels like winning the lottery when you manage to park outside or even close to your own home, as most of the time you find yourself having to leave your car halfway up the road because someone else has nabbed “your” spot.

But one disgruntled homeowner has slammed their neighbour for being inconsiderate of the roadside parkers around them. The person claimed their neighbour has their own driveway, but keeps leaving their car parked on the kerb outside of the person’s house – meaning they have to find somewhere else to park.

In a post on Reddit, the person fumed: “My neighbours tend to park their car daily in front of my house instead of their own, they even park there when there are no cars in their driveway. My kerb is blocked daily from 8am to midnight, so I can’t even park in front of my house when I need to or have guests around. Is there some reason why people do this? Am I missing some thoughts before I talk to them nicely?”

The poster said they know that street parking is a free-for-all and they don’t “own the kerb” outside their house, but they believe that “etiquette” dictates their neighbour should use their own spaces first before parking outside someone else’s property. They added: ” It’s getting ridiculous now. [The car is] parked [outside my house] every day, especially when they have room in their driveway/kerb space.”

Commenters on the post – which was shared to a local Reddit forum for the city of Markham in Canada – were largely sympathetic to the poster’s plight, but many said that if their neighbour isn’t parked illegally, there’s nothing they can do. One person wrote: “You can try asking them to park in their own spot, but if they’re not parking illegally, there’s not much you can do.” Another added: “Park in front of their house then, or just go talk to them.”

Others simply dismissed the poster’s complaints, telling them they “don’t own” the road so the neighbour can park wherever they like.
