A relative of the mum-to-be has shared details of her recent baby shower – and the strange phone conversation that followed. And people have a lot to say about the pregnant woman’s behaviour
A pregnant woman has come under fire following her reaction at her recent baby gender reveal – and subsequent demand.
Welcoming your first baby is an incredibly exciting time for the majority of mums. But it’s no secret that some really have their hearts set on a particular gender.
That’s the case for one future parent, Lena (not her real name), who desperately wanted to have a little girl. But her actions have led to a lot of raised eyebrows amongst family and friends.
One relative relayed all in a post shared on Reddit, claiming that while she is pregnant with her second child (she already has a little boy), her husband’s cousin Lena is expecting her first.
While the two women are not especially close, they have reportedly made more of an effort in light of their shared pregnancies. And during their shared conversations, Lena revealed she wanted to have a little girl, noting that she just couldn’t see herself raising a son.
Then came Lena’s baby shower – and she discovered she was having a baby boy. “She was visibly disappointed after finding out the sex of her baby,” the relative claimed. “She threw on a fake smile during the actual reveal, but didn’t keep it up for long. For the rest of the party, Lena remained frustrated, and was cold and short with everyone who tried to congratulate her.”
And that wasn’t the end of it. The relative revealed that she is preparing to host her own baby shower (rather than a gender reveal party), explaining that she and her husband have found out they are having a little girl, but want to keep the news as a surprise for everyone until the birth.
“A couple days ago, Lena called to ask about my baby’s gender,” she continued. “She said that if I’m expecting a girl, she won’t come to the baby shower. When I asked why, she said she’s still ‘mourning her daughter’, and doesn’t want to be reminded that she’s not having a girl. She also said that since she’d shared her reveal with the family, it was only fair I told her.
“I reminded her we weren’t telling anyone until birth, but told her she was welcome to avoid the shower if she wasn’t comfortable attending. Lena continued to pressure me to tell her, but I stood my ground. After some back and forth, she told me I was being inconsiderate, as I knew how devastated she’d been. She said she deserved to know if I was about to ‘rub my happiness in her face’.
“That’s when I ran out of patience. I told Lena that if having a boy was that awful to her, she shouldn’t have thrown herself a gender reveal in the first place. I said that she could stop celebrating her pregnancy if she wanted to, but she can’t dictate what I do about mine.”
The poster went on to say that the incident has divided the family, with some on Lena’s side saying she shouldn’t dismiss her pain, while others are on her side.
But the Reddit community were all in agreement. One person wrote in response: “I think if it lasts more than a few seconds it’s unreasonable. Like maybe if you have 4 boys and no.5 is another boy it can last a few minutes lol. But in all seriousness it was a 50/50 chance, if she felt this strongly then a gender reveal was a stupid idea!”
A second said: “You are being extremely patient, I wouldn’t be quite as nice ! My niece is going through IVF again , is desperate for a baby, she’s had many miscarriages. Tell Lena she’s an a*****e!”
A third added: “It should disgust you. It’s sexism. It’s deplorable to think you would bring a child into this world, and then treat them differently because of their sex. The child doesn’t get a choice.”
And a fourth concluded: “Yeah, disappointment, I get. But to say you’re dismissing her ‘PAIN’? What pain…that she’s having a healthy baby? Some sadness I would understand, but this is way beyond that. The way she’s carrying on is concerning. That needs to be addressed BEFORE the little tyke gets here, because BOY is he in for a rough ride.”
