Flies are a nuisance at the best of times, and as the weather gets warmer, the pests are more likely to appear. But one natural hack could keep them away from your home

Banish flies from your home in seconds with one natural deterrent.

Let’s face it, we’re all glad to finally be seeing the sun a little more frequently. Being able to have our windows open to let some fresh air in, and sit outside can do wonders for our mental health so we don’t feel as cooped up all day, but there is one negative to the nice weather – the increase in flies.

Flies are a nuisance at the best of times, but having them buzz around your kitchen when you’re trying to make your lunch is a nightmare. Beyond just being annoying, flies can spread bacteria such as Salmonella, typhoid and E-Coli, so it’s important to get rid of them as soon as you spot them.

And thankfully, there is an easy way to banish flies from your home for good – and all you need is one natural ingredient. Walter Murphy, a pest control expert at Price Your Job, said there are certain smells that flies can’t stand, and spreading the scents around your home will make flies stay away.

What’s more, the scents are delightful for us, meaning you’ll be able to keep flies at bay and have a wonderfully smelling home. So what scents can you use? According to Walter, essential oils are the key, with options including lemongrass, lavender, and peppermint – which can also help banish ants as well as flies, The Express reports.

The expert said: “Anything that contains essential oils such as lemongrass or peppermint will keep flies at bay. These natural fragrances give off a strong smell that instantly deters flies from entering your home. There are plenty of household sprays and perfumes that contain essential oils. You can use them in every room in the house.”

You can pick up essential oils from Amazon, with a bottle of peppermint essential oil setting you back around £3. You can use the bottle of oil to make your own spray by mixing it with water, or you can pick up a pre-mixed spray from Amazon for £9.99.

For an even cheaper trick, you could also try putting cinnamon sticks around your home, as flies and other insects can’t stand the smell of the spice. This scent can also be captured in the form of cinnamon-infused air fresheners or cinnamon-scented candles. Walter explained: “Flies hate the smell of cinnamon. You may consider purchasing a cinnamon- infused air freshener to reduce the number of flies in your home. Burning cinnamon candles is also another great way to get rid of flies, as the smell will spread easily around the property.”

And although it might not be the cheapest method, vodka can also be a great deterrent for house flies. The expert added: “Flies cannot bear the smell of vodka, so you may want to use a spray that contains vodka to ensure that no flies enter your home. You can also place vodka bags around your home, especially in areas like the kitchen, in order to prevent any food contamination.”
