I’ve seen ads for Il Makiage all over social media for multiple years. Their Woke Up Like This foundation seemed too good to be true – models swept the cream across their faces and it magically disappeared, leaving a matte full coverage no makeup had ever given me.
I resisted for a while, believing the positive comments and flawless application to be some trickery of editing and paid actors. But my current foundation, the L’Oreal Magic BB Cream, I’ve had so long the packaging has changed twice since my purchase.
So I took the plunge and took Il Makiage’s foundation shade quiz. It asks you to match yourself to several increasingly similar models and their skin tones, has you determine your undertones, then asks a few questions about your application methods.

It’s thorough and it takes about five minutes – but the results are spot on. Because when my foundation arrived at the door, I could tell from the very first glance it would suit me.
Held up against my face, the bottle matched me perfectly. And one pump onto my hand confirmed my suspicions: this £39 was the best I’d spent in a while.

Applied with a beauty blender, it blotted into my skin with ease, hiding my pores and blemishes more with every pat. A little went a long way, with three pumps giving my whole face an even medium coverage.

I usually apply a liberal amount of concealer before any kind of foundation or BB cream, but it was completely unnecessary with Il Makiage. The bottle will last me a long time, and I can’t wait to be picture-perfect every day.
I’m not the only one in love with Il Makiage’s sorcery. The foundation has 4.5 stars from 1,020,048 reviews. Most raved about how surprisingly good the foundation is and of the naysayers complaining about their shades, I’d urge them to retake the quiz and try again.
