Great British Bake Off star and presenter Briony May-Williams has revealed her tried and tested tips to keep your cheeses fresh for longer without altering the taste or texture

Brits are a nation of cheese lovers – but nothing is worse than a gone-off Gouda.

With the cost-of-living crisis still hitting us hard, keeping your food fresh for longer is a great way to reduce waste and save money. Cheese is also notoriously expensive, so any hacks that can preserve your precious Brie for a little longer is a huge win for your bank balance (and your belly).

Luckily, a celebrity chef has shared her top tips to help you keep your fromage from expiring for an ‘extra six weeks’ using a genius 10p hack, without affecting the taste or changing the texture.

Presenting on BBC Morning Live, Great British Bake Off star Briony May-Williams raved about using white vinegar to keep your Cheddar stash fresher for longer. The chef says the simple hack works with other cheeses including Edam and Gouda.

Simply soak a piece of kitchen roll in white vinegar then add it to a zip lock back along with your cheese before popping it into the fridge. According to The Express, the acidic properties of vinegar can kill ‘around 82 per cent of mould species’ which prevents the cheese from going off.

If you’re worried about your cheese toasty tasting of vinegar, don’t worry – Briony says the hack ‘won’t affect the taste’ and can ‘prolong’ its lifespan for ‘up to an extra six weeks’. If you don’t have any vinegar lying around the kitchen, you can pick up a litre bottle from Asda for £1.09. You’ll only need around 10ml to soak a kitchen roll, meaning the hack works out less than 11p per go.

Briony also hailed sugar cubes for preventing cheese from sweating. “Once you’ve opened a pack of cheese, transfer it to a food storage container,” the presenter added. “Pop two sugar cubes inside the container and make sure it is tightly sealed.”

The sugar should absorb any excess moisture that normally causes the cheese to sweat and expire quickly, whilst also removing those stinky odours. If you’re not the kind of person who uses sugar cubes whilst nibbling on afternoon tea in your conservatory – don’t worry. You can pick a 500g bag up from Asda for just £1.45.
