Prince Harry is reported to have left his wife Meghan Markle in the capital of Nigeria, Abuja, while he flew 120 miles to visit a military hospital in an ‘unsafe’ Nigerian territory

Prince Harry is reported to have left his wife Meghan Markle in Abuja while the couple partake in their Nigeria tour, with the Duke visiting a hospital in an “unsafe” territory.

The Sussexes are currently in Nigeria for their 72-hour whistle-stop “unofficial royal tour”, with them having touched down in the country in the early hours of Friday morning. Their trip to West Africa comes after Harry’s brief visit to the United Kingdom when he flew to his former country of residence the day after his son, Prince Archie, turned five, for an Invictus Games event.

And now reports are saying that Harry left his wife in the Nigerian capital Abuja so that he could visit a military hospital in a region dubbed as “unsafe” by the UK government. The Duke of Sussex is said to have flown 120 miles to the hospital in Kaduna on Saturday.

The UK foreign office has guidance online which reads: “FCDO advises against all travel to Kaduna State”. The UK Government’s site also states: “Banditry and violent attacks are frequent and there is a high threat of kidnap. Incidents of intercommunal violence occur and trains are vulnerable to attack. If you’re travelling in the north-west against FCDO advice, be extremely cautious and monitor local media.”

Harry, who is said to have a four-strong security detail in tow, visited the hospital and met with Nigerian soldiers who suffered injuries in fighting against the terrorist group Boko Haram. Many were victims of ambushes or bomb blasts.

This comes after Harry gave a moving speech when he and Meghan visited a school on Friday shortly after they touched down in the Nigerian capital city. Speaking to the children and addressing the room, Harry said: “In some places around the world, more than you would believe, there is a stigma against mental health. Too many people don’t want to talk about it because it’s invisible, it’s in your mind and we can’t see it.”

Elsewhere in his speech, the Duke of Sussex continued: “There is no shame to be able to acknowledge that today is a bad day. Okay? If you woke up this morning feeling sad, if you left school feeling stressed, if you’ve lost a loved one in your family who you usually turn to or speak to, all of these things you may be led to believe are not for conversation. We are here today to tell you that that is not the case.

“Every single one of those things is completely normal. It is a human reaction, whether it’s grief, stress, whatever the feeling is, it comes from experiences you have had.”
