There is an unexpected rule in place when it comes to playing outside for Prince William and Princess Kate’s three children, George, Charlotte and Louis thanks to their Norland nanny

Prince William and Princess Kate’s children might be little royals – but they still have to follow the rules at home.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are always impeccably behaved on official outings – and the same can be said of their down time, too.

While their parents are incredibly hands-on, they are also cared for by their Spanish Norland nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo. She is said to run a tight ship – and that includes the children’s outdoor play.

“There will be lots and lots of outdoor play…Lots of bike rides, playing with their dogs, potentially some gardening. … Yes, you are getting mucky with your hands in the soil,” revealed Louise Heren, the author of Nanny in a Book, via HELLO!. She added: “If it is tipping it down, they will still go out.”

It perhaps comes as no surprise that the Wales children are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors. Both William and Kate have spoken of their love of being close to nature – something they are keen to pass on to their brood.

Speaking in the 2020 documentary Prince William: A Planet For Us All, the future King remarked: “Seeing my children, seeing the passion in their eyes and the love for being outdoors. They find a bug or they love watching how bees are forming honey.”

He further noted: “George, particularly, if he’s not outdoors, he’s quite like a caged animal. He needs to get outside.”

Princess Kate, meanwhile, revealed that she prioritises time outside with her children during her appearance on Giovanna Fletcher’s podcast Happy Mum, Happy Baby .

“As children, we spent a lot of time outside, and it’s something I’m really passionate about,” Kate said. “I think it’s so great for physical and mental wellbeing and laying foundations. It’s such a great environment to spend time in, building those quality relationships without the distractions of ‘I’ve got to cook’ and ‘I’ve got to do this.’ And actually, it’s so simple.”

She continued, “That’s what I would want them to remember, those moments with me as a mother, but also the family going to the beach, getting soaking wet, filling our boots full of water, those are what I would want them to remember. Not a stressful household where you’re trying to do everything and not really succeeding at one thing.”

Towards the end of the episode, Giovanna prompted Kate to complete the sentence “I’m happy when…”. Kate sweetly replied: “I’m with my family outside in the countryside and we’re all filthy dirty.”
