Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Archewell charity moved quickly to remove the ‘delinquent’ tag from the non-profit organisation after a scathing letter by California’s attorney general, Rob Bonta

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell charity is no longer listed as ‘delinquent’.

The non-profit organisation had been forced to suspend all fundraising and spending after being declared “delinquent” in the US. It was categorised as such in the registry of charities and fundraisers due to its failure to submit its annual report and registration fees. However, sources close to the couple insist any missing files were “declared on time”.

The charity’s new status in the registry is now marked as “current” according to the Department of Justice’s website.

In a statement to The LA Times, the California attorney general’s press office said: “After being in touch with our Registry of Charities and Fundraisers, the organisation is current and in good standing.”

The initial scathing letter from California’s attorney general, Rob Bonta, said the charity had allowed official registration fees to lapse since the beginning of May. The note continued to say the charity was then considered “not in good standing” and was restricted from undertaking activities requiring registration. This included soliciting or distributing charitable funds. It added: “The organisation may also be subject to penalties, and its registration may be suspended or revoked.”

Archewell had to then submit records to show why payments were late. However, a source told the Mirror the fees weren’t even late. The source claimed: “For whatever reason, it has not been cashed. As soon as the foundation learnt of the problem, they immediately issued another cheque. Harry and Meghan’s team hope this will quickly resolve the issue within the next week.”

A representative for AWF later told The Mirror: “We have diligently investigated the situation and can confirm that The Archewell Foundation remains fully compliant and in good standing. Due payments were made promptly and in accordance with the IRS’s processes and procedures. Furthermore, all necessary paperwork had been filed by the Foundation without error or wrongdoing.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex founded Archewell in March 2020 after they stepped down from their roles as senior working royals. Archewell is made up of a non-profit organisation as well as for-profit media ventures, including Archewell Audio and Archewell Productions.

The news of their charity’s status came as they were finalising their successful tour in Nigeria. As news broke of the issue, the couple’s official site posted a thank you message to the African country. As they heaped the praise on the country following their visit, they insisted it will be the first of many.

The conclusion of the post read: “The Duke and Duchess would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all the event organizers, military officials and the whole Nigerian community for their tremendous hospitality and the first of many memorable trips.”
