Brits have bemoaned the ‘watery sadness’ of Hellmann’s world-famous mayonnaise, with many asking why the quality of their sandwich spread has been in ‘steep decline’ for the last few months
Condiment lovers have been left heartbroken by the “watery sadness” of Hellmann’s mayonnaise
Taking to Reddit, Brits moaned the product has been in “steep decline” for the past few months. One user said a recent experience was their “final straw” and claimed the poor quality was no longer a fluke. Others recommended alternative brands while truth-seekers tried to get to the bottom of what was causing the unfortunate phenomenon
The original post read: “I had one bad bottle of Hellmanns mayonnaise, I put it down to bad luck. Then I had a second bad bottle, okay maybe this is just a mayonnaise curse? But no, number 3 is just as sad and watery as the previous [2]. Has anyone been affected by the steep decline in mayonnaise quality?”
Some comments indicated the difference in quality could be down to the container holding the mayo. One suggested the squeeze bottles were “a bit not right,” while another claimed the bottle had more water in it than the jarred mayonnaise.
They wrote: “You’re right. The bottle has water as the second ingredient but it’s the third in the jar. The bottle also has lower egg content at 7.9% (third ingredient) compared to the jar with 8.9% (second ingredient). The bottle also has sunflower oil which the jar does not.”
However, this came as little solace to the original poster. They responded: “I usually use the squeeze bottles and my feral family can’t be trusted with jars. Always crumbs in the jar…” Later, however, they revealed they had taken the risk and purchased a jar of the white stuff. They added: “I have bought a jar of Heinz mayonnaise, I hope it’s good!”
Other users said the sorry state of their favourite condiment reflected the times in our country. A comment read: “i noticed all mayonnaise has gone like this this past 6 months, from everywhere, every brand and supermarket own, except hellmans in a jar. thats still nice and thick. expensive asf but thick.” [sic]. The original poster agreed, joking: “What has this country come to that even mayonnaise is declining…”
The Mirror has contacted Hellmann’s for comment.
