A Deliveroo driver has taken to the streets of West London on a rather vintage-looking Penny-farthing, with customers suggesting the unusual form of transport could see him ‘raking in the cash’

A Deliveroo driver has been spotted delivering food using a somewhat unconventional form of transport.

Most delivery staff choose travel by car, bike and moped. However, one West Londoner drew attention by riding around on a Penny-farthing.

In a snap shared to X (formerly Twitter), the man was seen happily riding through the streets of the capital, dressed in the typical Deliveroo uniform with his wares strapped to his back in a backpack.

Sharing the post, an X user said: “Deliveroo rider on a penny farthing might be one of the most West London things I’ve ever seen.”

Others were quick to comment on the pos, with one writing: “Dude is probably raking it in on tips alone.” Another joked: “When I said I wanted a delivery about 18.50 that’s not quite what I meant….”

A third said: “Jacob Rees-Mogg has a new side gig I see.” Meanwhile another pointed out: “I can’t help but feel your options for resting along the way would be severely limited.”

Even the official London Eye account also got in on the action, joking: “That might just be the second biggest wheel in London.”

But it’s not all good news. Last month Deliveroo, which was established in 2013, reported a dip in UK trading as consumer spending faces ‘uncertain’ times.

The takeaway titan revealed order numbers in the UK and Ireland hit a plateau at 39.7 million in the first quarter. The company’s gross transaction value (GTV) in the region climbed by 6%, a slight decrease from the 7% growth recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Will Shu, Deliveroo’s founder and CEO, commented on the current market conditions, saying the UK and Ireland’s consumer climate “remains stable but uncertain”. Despite the stagnation in local markets, Deliveroo has managed to achieve an uptick in global order numbers in the first quarter, with a 2% rise following a 3% decline throughout 2023.

Shu went on to praise his team’s efforts, stating: “The team has been relentlessly focused on delivering service and value for money, helping drive a return to order growth and continued growth in GTV.”
