A Martin Lewis fan has explained how they found £82,000 in missing pension savings after following his advice.

There is an estimated £27billion sitting in lost or forgotten pensions. Pensions can become lost for several reasons including if you’ve moved address, lost paperwork, or if the company has been taken over or rebranded. But luckily, tracking down a forgotten pension pot is easier than you may think.

MoneySavingExpert.com reader Jodi explained how she was able to track down £82,000 in a lost pension pot after using the free Pension Tracing Service. She said: “Thanks to you promoting lost pensions on your TV show, we contacted the [free] Pension Tracing Service & discovered a lost pension pot worth £82,000. Thank you Martin. We didn’t know where to start looking as it was over 40 years ago & my husband could not remember who it was with as he had lost all paperwork. He was shocked to find out the amount.”

The Pension Tracing Service allows you to search a database of more than 200,000 workplace and personal pension schemes. But it will only tell you the contact details of a provider – not the amount you could have in a pension. You’ll need to contact the pension administrator yourself to find out if you have any funds with them.

Alternatively, you can contact your employer and they should be able to provide you with the right details. Pension Wise is a Government service that offers free pension guidance and advice. The Mirror previously reported on how one mum found £48,000 in just one forgotten pension pot.

PR director Karin Ridgers, 52, who is mum to 17-year-old son Callum, said she had no idea how much money she had accrued in workplace pensions over the years. For old bank accounts, there is a free service My Lost Account which could help you find forgotten cash.
