A woman has shared that she will be cutting ties with her new “perfect” husband due to his brother’s behaviour at their wedding reception.

Clara, 29, married her long term partner Liam recently and described the day as “perfect”. However, there was a major incident on the day that made her reconsider the whole marriage and now wants an annulment. Clara was never a fan of her husband’s older brother Ben, 30. However, she accepted that Liam chose his brother to be his best man. She shared in a Reddit post that she did like most of her in-laws but Ben “rubbed her up the wrong way” with his behaviour.

She added: “He would crack all of these jokes that aren’t really funny and tries way too hard to be the cool and popular guy. Think Screech from Saved by the Bell, only ten times more annoying.”

Clara noted that Liam used to get “more attention” than Ben when they were children after he was diagnosed with high-functioning autism. This led to Ben “acting out! in his teenage years which forced their parent’s attention onto him instead. She added: “To this day, their parents are more likely to side with Ben than Liam”.

The 29-year-old also described her husband as being a huge “people pleaser” which is where the problem initially arose. One month before the wedding, Clara said she was having dinner with her soon-to-be parents in law, Liam, and his brother Ben.

Clare said the evening was fun at first, with the group discussing plans outside of the wedding. However, this was when Ben revealed that he had plans to ask his girlfriend of five years, Melody, to marry him. Clare explained: “Of course, we were all excited and asked about his plans for the proposal.”

But this was when Ben shared that he hoped to do it at the wedding reception. Clare added: “I laughed nervously, knowing his tendency to make bad jokes and told him ‘You do that and my brothers will throw you out of the venue. But Ben got offended that I laughed and I realised he was being serious.”

At this moment, Liam gave his brother full permission to do it saying: “Of course you can! Melody will love it” – without asking Clara first. She wrote: “I was so upset, Liam and I moved to a different room and I explained to him about how another person proposing or making a major announcement was in bad taste as it takes away from the bride and groom.”

Once told, Liam understood Clara’s feelings and agreed that they should organise a party for Ben to propose at instead, with Liam telling his brother that the wedding proposal would not be going ahead, which he apparently understood. However, when the big day rolled around, the service went off “without a hitch” and it was then time for the reception.

Ben began to deliver his best man speed which Clara said was “full of bad jokes and weird attempts at puns” but overall was “very nice”. During his speech, Ben was moving aroudn the tables, where he eventually stopped at his girlfriend Melody and proposed.

Clara shared that she had “stormed out” of the reception room and Liam and her mum followed to comfort her, with Liam insisting “They told me it’d be fine. They told me it’d be fine.” Clare said by that point “she was done” and her mum offered to drive her home, while Liam “begged for forgiveness”. She ignored this and told him to not to call her, and left.

Clara said she had not seen her new husband since then, and her family was also upset about the situation. However, at the same time, Liam’s family were congratulating Ben and Melody, posting pictures of their proposal rather than her wedding. She said: “I was prepared to file for annulment and move on. That’s until Liam sent me an email and I learned that Ben and their parents applied pressure over and over on Liam until he finally caved the night before the wedding.”

“I asked him why he didn’t come to me and he said ‘You were so stressed and I didn’t want to worry you.’ Liam concluded in his email with “I want another chance. Please give me another chance.”

Clara shared in her post that the email has confused her, and she doesn’t know whether she should try and salvage her marriage. Or whether the incident was just a sign of further issues down the line. She said: “I’m really torn. I don’t like that Liam went behind my back thanks to family pressure. That’s not a good sign for a marriage. On the other hand? I still love him and since he’s a horrible liar, I know he’s telling the truth. I still haven’t made up my mind about what I want to do. Is our marriage salvageable? Can we rebuild? Liam is genuine but can I persuade him that a family should never do that to a member?”

The post garnered over 400 comments from others who had experienced partners unable to stand up to family pressure. One Reddit user warned that the family will continue to do this in the future as “they know what buttons to press to pressure Liam”. Another shared how their first marriage was like this, and they bullied them into choosing a different name for their newborn child, they added: “I ignored all these issues because I was young, but now I am divorced and say never again”.”

A third added: “I’m doubtful this is the first time he has allowed his family to run roughshod over his wife and even more doubtful he can ever change. This would be a miserable marriage.” The majority of the commenters advised Clara to annul the marriage and move on.
