Will the Northern Lights be over London Sunday, May 19 – chances of seeing them and how to keep track on phone

The best thing about the nighttime at the moment is the chance to see the Northern Lights. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights have been very active across the UK and if you want to know when you can see them then you can keep up to date with when they could be sighted via notifications on your phone.

You need a clear night to be able to see the Northern Lights as the Met Office says that ‘Cloud cover ultimately blocks the view of the light’.

They also advise that the lights are ‘best viewed away from any light pollution, in remote areas, facing the northern horizon – north-facing coasts produce some of the best viewing locations.’

Chances of Northern Lights on Saturday, May 18

Sadly it seems as though there will be very little chance to see the Northern Lights today as AuroraWatchUK, a free service offering alerts of when the aurora might be visible from the UK, say there will be no significant activity today.

Is the weather tonight good for spotting the Aurora?

According to the Met Office, tonight’s weather sees low cloud and food patches in the forecast. They said: “Isolated showers mostly dying out, with clear spells for many at first, ahead of further low cloud and fog patches spreading southwest. Becoming chilly in clearer western areas towards dawn. Minimum temperature 6 °C.”

This means that there will be low visibility to see the lights tonight.

How to get alerts to your phone so you don’t miss the Northern Lights

To get the phone alerts you can download AuroraWatch UK Aurora Alerts from your phone’s App Store. By agreeing to notifications you will get a message on your phone when the Northern Lights are likely to be. This will be a red alert.
