Meghan Markle joined Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in a chat in Nigeria and the Nigerian-American economist who is currently serving as the director-general of the World Trade Organisation gave her words of advice
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry won the plaudits during their Nigeria trip as the African nation seemingly welcomed them with open arms.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex planned their recent trip with a key focus on the Invictus Games and veterans’ issues in the country and took part in a number of speeches during their three-day visit. During one appearance, former Suits star Meghan spoke about women’s representations, travel, and her recently discovered Nigerian heritage.
Meghan was joined on the panel, which was moderated by broadcaster Mo Abudu, by Nigerian-American economist who is currently serving as the director-general of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. And Ngozi has now opened up on the advice she gave the star ahead of their talk, telling her “we must have fun”.

Speaking with PEOPLE about her conversation with Meghan, Ngozi said: “I said to the duchess when she was coming that we must have fun.” She added: “The conversation was wonderful. I think the impression that people had of her is of a very warm, loving person. And you can see the way that the room reacted to her.”
She also explained that Meghan “fit in very well” with the room full of educational experts, describing the Duchess as an “intelligent, thoughtful person”.
The pair first connected during the Covid-19 pandemic when Harry and Meghan tried to ensure that vaccines would also be distributed to underserved countries. Ngozi explained how it showed the Sussexes “really cared”, saying they had several calls via Zoom regarding the situation.
After Harry and Meghan’s trip to Nigeria, Harry insisted the duo would be doing more trips around the world as they strive to make change. Speaking to PEOPLE shortly after leaving the coutnry the Duke said: “It is hugely important for us to meet directly with people, supporting our causes and listening, in order to bring about solutions, support and positive change.”
He continued: “There’s only so much one can do from home and over Zoom, so we look forward to traveling more because the work matters. Whether it’s the Archewell Foundation, Invictus or any of our other causes, there will always be reasons to meet the people at the heart of our work.”
The Prince then added he was delight with the growth of the Invictus Games and the efforts made to make sure Nigeria was included, opening up on his love for Africa and calling it a “very, very special place”.
