A mum found herself on the receiving end of ‘rude comments’ after moving seats on a flight – but while one fellow passenger was not happy, social media was on her side

A woman sparked debate online after moving seats with her baby after a flight attendant offered her an upgrade – and a fellow passenger wasn’t happy.

Arguments over plane seats are becoming a common occurrence and often see videos and complaints go viral online. Flying can be nerve-wracking for some and being stuck in a cramped seat or far away from your group people can make things even more uncomfortable.

But not everyone has the same approach to seat-swapping. One mum took to Reddit recently to seek some advice after she caused controversy on a three-hour flight with her 19-month-old son.

The unnamed 31-year-old was moved three rows up on the plane because she was cramped into a small space with her infant and a backpack she was carrying.

She recalled: “They [the airline staff] usually try to accommodate people with young infants. I was delighted and accepted right away. The flight attendant helped me move my things and explained the situation to the other passenger on row nine. My son was on my lap the whole flight, the extra seat was just extra space to feel less crowded and not bump elbows.”

While the mum was pleased, one passenger appeared less than impressed. She added: “The passenger did not appreciate it at all, she started complaining to the flight attendant that she was planning to sleep on the flight, and that it would be ‘impossible’ now.”

The flight attendant told the annoyed passenger they try to accommodate young parents where possible – but they still weren’t having any of it. She claimed the passenger told her she “should be ashamed to impose all this noise on people”, but insists her son “only cried once” throughout the entire journey.

After the woman sought advice over the incident, her post raked in over 6,000 comments – with a number of people rushing to show support.

One individual commented: “You paid for a seat, the airline accommodated you and explained to the other passenger. The other passenger paid for her seat only, not the entire row. Sounds like other passenger was an unpleasant person, which isn’t your fault. If another mother with a young child did pay for the seats near her, I’d almost guarantee she would have complained still.”

Another pointed out: “I have been flying since I was 6 months old. I try to remember that whenever I get annoyed. My husband used to make rude comments until I glared at him and reminded him he would fly to his grandparent in Florida monthly as a baby. “

And a third wrote: “You didn’t ask for the seat. It was offered to you. And as the flight attendant said, the other passenger only paid for one seat.”
