A man has been applauded for refusing to attend his friend’s wedding after realising it would cost him thousands of pounds to stay in the ‘luxury hotel’ they’ve been asked to book for the big day

A man is refusing to go to his rich friend’s wedding after discovering how much it would cost him.

Weddings are notoriously expensive, with the average UK ceremony totalling up to more than £20,000 once you’ve factored in the venue, dress, food, and entertainment. When it comes to ‘destination’ weddings – aka where people travel to an often abroad location to tie the knot – this can be even more expensive.

Most people don’t consider the price of being a guest, who are often obliged to buy a new outfit and stay in a hotel overnight just so they can attend. However, one man has decided to RSVP no to his pal’s big day for this exact reason, and isn’t backing down…

Taking to Reddit, the anonymous man claims he was invited by his doctor friend to their ‘destination wedding’. He says the bride and groom-to-be have a combined income of around £312,892 – compared to him and his partner who earn around £140,000.

“We looked up the hotel where we must stay to attend and it is [£1,250] a night, I think this is absurd as we must stay three nights as a minimum,” the post reads. “The most I’ve ever paid for a night is £470. Am I overreacting?”

The man also claimed the ‘luxury hotel’ doesn’t offer a free pickup from the airport, despite it being a 30-minute drive away, meaning they’ll both have to fork out for a hire car or taxi. “Tell me, am I being cheap or am I being reasonable?” he added. “The wife and I are on the same page.”

Swathes of users flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts – unanimously agreeing the costs were unfair and ‘absurd’. One person fumed: “I wouldn’t fault you at all for declining the wedding invitation.”

Another agreed, commenting: “That is ridiculous to ask people to spend that much money to go to a wedding – I don’t care how much you make.” A third added: “You’re not being cheap. They’re allowed to have a destination wedding if they want but that’s way too expensive to expect people to make a large time and money commitment. If it’s important to them to get to celebrate with their invitees they should also host something closer to home afterwards.”

While a fourth dubbed destinations weddings as ‘selfish’ and ‘pretentious’. They continued: “If you want to have a destination wedding then you should be rich enough to pay for everyone you want to attend.” When asked if he could not choose a cheaper hotel nearby, the user claimed the invite specifically says guests should all be at the same hotel – as that’s where the ceremony is taking place.
