In a relationship, the likelihood is that one of you will be a better cook than the other – but when one woman’s boyfriend kicked off about her pasta choice, she was left baffled
Most people have a food they can’t stand, and when faced with it they physically wouldn’t be able to eat it – even if they wanted to try.
But one woman was left confused after her 35-year-old boyfriend started a huge row over a specific pasta shape that looked similar to a food he hates – SpaghettiOs.
She said her boyfriend is a “little bit of a fussy eater”, and as a result, she does “most of the cooking” in their relationship. “I regularly make pasta dishes and he’s completely fine with eating them – he even says that my pasta bake is his favourite food”, she boasted. However, when she got a different shape of pasta, things became tense.
Taking to Reddit’s ‘Am I The A**hole’ forum, the woman asked whether she had done anything wrong by purchasing pasta that was a similar ‘O’ shape to the spaghetti he hates so much.
She wrote: “I went and bought the groceries for the week and happened to pick up some Anelli pasta so I can make pasta bake, his favourite dish. For those who don’t know, Anelli pasta is hoop-shaped like SpaghettiOs.
“As soon as he saw me putting them away in the cupboard he got really annoyed at me, and asked why I bought them knowing he had an issue with SpaghettiOs. I said it’s not the same thing, it’s just dried pasta with the exact same ingredients as the other shapes of pasta he eats every week.
“He said he’s been very clear that it’s a food he won’t eat, and he wants me to go out and buy a different type. I said I know he doesn’t like SpaghettiOs, but maybe if he’s eating his favourite meal he won’t notice them and it might help him get over his issue with them. Am I the a**hole here? I think it’s a weird hill to die on and that he’s overreacting.”
People reckoned she’d done nothing wrong because she wasn’t trying to feed him SpaghettiOs, so there was no issue. One wrote: “You aren’t pushing SpaghettiOs on him, you didn’t buy them. You bought plain, uncooked pasta. He’s 35, he should understand it will not taste like the canned spaghetti-o’s. Does he have a really bad association with SpaghettiOs or something?”
Another joked: “A grown man telling you what to cook and which ingredients to use? Did he lose both his arms in a SpaghettiOs explosion? Tell him it’s his turn to cook and shop this week. He sounds like a toddler.”
Someone else asked: “Am I misunderstanding something here? Don’t SpaghettiOs come from a can? It sounds like you are making something that he likes. Maybe he has a phobia of circles…” The original poster clarified it’s not a circle issue, as “he’ll eat other circular foods like cereal etc, it’s just the pasta he has an issue with”.
One Redditor penned: “Lmao this is wild. I’m still confused but ok. He’s 35, he can do his own grocery shopping and make his own food if he doesn’t want to eat your circle shaped pasta. It’s not like you did it on purpose. Though, I’m petty and would go all out and buy only circle-shaped everything.”
