M&S confirmed the plans in its full-year results published last week with four new “full line” stores set to open over the next year along with nine new food halls

Marks and Spencer (M&S) plans to open 13 new stores across the UK over the next year.

The high street retailer and supermarket chain confirmed the plans in its full-year results published last week. M&S said that it plans to open four new “full line” stores over the next year along with nine food halls. The first of these new stores will be opening this month at the Galleries in Washington, City of Sunderland on May 30.

The new 43,000 sq ft store – which will replace the existing food hall in the retail park will offer food and clothing ranges and will have a bakery, florist and wine shop. The store will also contain a click-and-collect service and will run 100% on electric energy as part of its plan to be a Net Zero business by 2040.

The next new opening will be a new food hall store in Guildford, at Ladymead Retail Park on June 12. Inside shoppers will find a large food hall, bakery and a card and wrap shop. There will also be a click-and-collect service for M&S orders as well as travel money.

In an announcement released today, M&S also confirmed new food halls in Sidcup, London on June 19 and in Friern Barnet, London in August. After that, a new full line store will open at Gallagher Retail Park, Dundee towards the end of the summer with a food hall in Largs set to open in 2025.

M&S has not confirmed where the other new stores will be and when they are planning to open them. Alongside the 13 new stores, M&S says it is anticipating 25 renewals over the next financial year – 12 of which will be in the capital. In London, the retailer says it will be renewing stores in Brixton Road, Chancery Lane, Blackheath, Teddington, and Islington over the coming months.

The openings and renewals are part of the retailer’s store rotation programme which will see it have 180 full line, and 420 food halls in the UK. In its results published last week, M&S said it was in the “strongest financial health since 1997” although the retailer’s chief executive, Stuart Machin did note that “there remains much work to do”.
