A parenting blogger has shared a golden tip that may just work wonders on your little one – with countless mums claiming that it will help distraught babies stop crying
An soothing song has gone viral on TikTok as countless mums claim it’ll make your baby stop crying ‘instantly’.
There’s no sound more deafening than a baby’s scream. Whether they’re kicking up a fuss about potty time or sobbing during the night, desperate mums will try almost anything to make them stop.
But now, pregnancy blogger Emily Rose Brewster – known as @emilyrosebrewster to fans – has shared a golden tip that may just work wonders on your little one. It involves playing a specific two-and-a-half minute song which has now racked up a staggering 46million likes on YouTube.
“I’m about to change your life if you’re a parent and I literally could not be more confident about it,” Emily told her 18.3k followers. “So, I’m currently on a walk with my near seven-month-old who’s going through a bit of a difficult phase, shall we say.
“If I put her in the car, in the pram – you name it – she’s kicking off. However, this little trick that my friend told me about is a game-changer… It’s a scientifically-made song that will make your baby happy, it’s called The Happy Song…
“…I’m stopping now because you really need to understand how important this is. It will change everything for you, it stops the babies crying in an instant – it is magic!” Emily isn’t the only one to sing praises about the miracle tune either, with various other parents vouching for it’s efficacy in the comments.
One wrote: “I swear by The Happy song!”, as others chimed in: “This song has saved me lol,” and: “It was my most listened to song on Spotify last year.” So, what actually is this mysterious song and where did it come from?
Eight years ago, Grammy Award-winning musician Imogen Heap worked with a team of Goldsmiths University scientists to produce the ultimate baby-pleasing song. To start, they surveyed 2,300 mums and dads across the UK who were asked to list the noises that seem to make their little ones cheerful.
Sneezing (51%), animal noises (23%) and baby laughter (28%) topped this list, with all three being compiled to what would soon become The Happy Song. The tempo and pitch of these were toggled with too, as scientists predicted what babies would like best.
Developmental psychologist Dr Addyman, who led the baby testing, said: “In the past, researchers have looked at how noises and music might sooth or distress babies. Rarely has anyone focused on what sounds make babies happy.
“The final song is a clever mixture of appealing sounds, musical motifs and interactive lyrics that give babies and parents a refreshing modern alternative to nursery rhymes.”
Rosey Davidson, a sleep consultant at Just Chill Baby Sleep (@justchillbabysleep), explained various other gentle tunes can have a similar effect – especially those with repetition. She told The Mirror: “Repetition and predictability in music create a sense of security and familiarity, which helps reduce stress and anxiety.
“Other types of music that might relax babies include classical music, lullabies, and nature sounds. Classical compositions, especially those with slow tempos and soft dynamics, can be particularly soothing. Lullabies have been used for generations to help babies calm and go to sleep. Nature sounds, like gentle rain or ocean waves, are also effective to calm the brain.
“However, nothing beats the sound of their parents. The unique sound of a parent’s voice can be more soothing than any recorded music or white noise.”
