A woman has taken to social media to share how she deters slugs from entering her garden so her plants survive the summer rather than becoming their favourite food source

A woman has been praised for sharing her go-to technique to stop pesky slugs from eating her potted plants. In a TikTok video, user @thelockdowngardener explained how a £1.80 product helps keep slugs off her plants, allowing them to bloom for the summer.

In her one-minute clip, she showed her 9,300 followers how she lathers the outside of her garden pots in Vaseline to stop slugs from climbing up them. She said: “Here we go again, it’s time to protect the hostas from those hungry slugs. I bought these metal stands last year and I put Vaseline on them around the rim and around the legs and it works really well.

  • ‘Entitled mum orders I wake her son up before school run – I taught her a lesson’
  • ‘I caught my mum sleeping with my husband – I can’t erase the image from my mind’
  • “I also bought some copper scouring pads and opened them up and put them around the base of the plant as an extra defense.” Later in the video, she admits some slugs still do make it onto the plants but it’s ‘far less’ than there would be without the defenses.

She added: “They [the pots] were sat under a tree so the slugs probably somersaulted onto them – they’re not stupid are they?” Commenting on her clip, one user said: “Me smiling at the mental image of Vaseline-coated slugs sliding around your garden uncontrollably.”

Another user added: “I’m trying this at the moment on lavender.” A third user said: “Slugs and snails love the hostas more than anything. Weevil larvae destroy the heucheras, my two favourite plants. It’s a mission each year to keep them away.” One more user added: “Get a couple of toads. No more slugs.”
