A cyclist is in a critical condition in hospital after a Met Police chase through Croydon ended with the car being pursued making off from officers. At about 1.05am this morning (Tuesday, June 4) a driver failed to stop for police, leading to a chase via Norbury Avenue only the Thornton Heath and Norbury border.
Officers lost the car and a short time later a male cyclist was found injured in Norbury Avenue, leaving them in critical condition. A crime scene is in place and the suspects escaped.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “At approximately 1.05 am on Tuesday, June 4, a police pursuit was initiated after a car failed to stop for police. The car made off from police and was lost.
“A short time later a male cyclist was found injured in Norbury Avenue and London Ambulance Service attended and the man was taken to a South London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
“His next of kin have been informed. A scene remains in place at Norbury Avenue. Enquiries continue to locate the car that made off from police. The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.”
A London Ambulance Service (LAS) spokesperson said: “We were called at 1.13am today (4 June) to reports of a road traffic collision involving a car and a cyclist on Norbury Avenue, Norbury.
“We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer. We also dispatched a trauma team from London’s air ambulance, which consisted of a doctor and a paramedic in a car.
“Our first paramedics arrived on scene in approximately two minutes.
“We treated a patient at the scene before taking them to a major trauma centre.”
