One of the best views in Norway can be seen from a new attraction in Fjord Norway — but you’ll have to climb a rickety rope ladder, 790 metres above a fjord, to see the spectacle

One of the best views in Norway can only be seen from a rickety ladder which stretches 790 metres above a fjord.

Stigull is one of the newest attractions in Fjord Norway. What only seems like a ladder, actually measures 40-metres-long and sits above a serene fjord in the Norwegian village of Loen. The activity site opened on May 31, and is a part of the Via Ferrata Loen hiking destination. To reach the 120-step ladder, you must first climb the initial part of ‘Route 2’ which heads to the top of Mount Hoven, on foot.

“Stigull is built to make the Via Ferrata facility in Loen more complete, and it is the first of its kind in Norway. With 120 steps and a slope of 45 degrees, this is a long ladder to the sky by international standards. The location offers an incredible view of the fjord landscape,” says Per Helge Bø, who works at Loen Active.

Once you reach the ladder and begin to climb it, you will be met with a sensation of floating in mid air whilst enjoying picturesque views of Norway, 790 metres above the fjords. “It looks like people are floating in thin air,” added Per.

Stigull is part of ‘Route 2’, which is located east of the Loen Skylift cable car – another popular attraction. The Via Ferrata is connected with both a zipline and a suspension bridge, as well as climbing routes of varying difficulty. Once at the top of Mount Hoven, visitors can enjoy a fantastic view, as well as a restaurant and shop connected to the cable car.

The zipline, which can easily be combined with a trip to Via Ferrarta Loen, flies above the Tungejølet gorge, looking towards the suspension bridge in Via Ferrata Loen. Both ziplines are located 1000 metres above the fjord, and only a five minute walk northeast of Loen Skylift — one of the steepest cable cars in the world.

“This is an adventure-filled experience for all climbing enthusiasts. The ladder has a relatively low difficulty level but feels very airy, so the sense of accomplishment is great when climbing this stage. It actually looks like people are floating in thin air,” Per continued.

“This new installation emphasizes our ongoing commitment to offering unique and exciting experiences in spectacular surroundings. We encourage all adventure seekers to try Stigull and get a truly unique fjord experience.”

The Via Ferrata Loen is a spectacular climbing route designed for anyone with moderate physical fitness. It can be undertaken both as a guided tour and as an individual tour without a guide for the experienced. Attractions at Via Ferrata Loen are located in the valley of Loen.

It takes four-and-a-half hours to drive to Loen from the city of Bergen or six hours from Oslo. The closest airports are Ørsta-Volda and Sandane — both of which have direct flights to and from Oslo and Bergen.
