Say goodbye to rotting fruit and swarms of pesky flies with this simple hack to keep your snacks colder for longer this summer. The cheap method has gone viral, but not everybody is convinced
Summer is just around the corner – meaning it’s finally time to get the BBQ on and have a party.
Aside from pesky wasps and swarms of fruit flies, the worst thing about summer is how quickly food spoils. The chocolate you brought just half an hour ago? Melted. The cheese plate you made for your friends? Sweating. Fruit is the worst culprit of all for this, which is infuriating. After all, nothing cools you down like a fresh slice of hydrating watermelon.
Luckily, one woman has come up with a ‘genius’ way to keep your snacks cold for longer – but it might not work for everyone…
Organisation expert Kate, known as Kate_ CleanHome on TikTok showed off the idea in a new video, with the caption “best party hack”. She simply takes a large foil tray – originally used for roasting food – and fills it with water. She then pops it into the freezer to solidify and chops up some fruit into smaller versions of the tray.
Once the water has frozen, you can use it as a base to keep your fruit cooler for longer. Tempted to give it ago? If you haven’t got any suitable containers hanging around the house – you can buy foil trays from most supermarkets and a slew of online retailers. For example, Tesco is selling three medium-sized foil trays for £2.30, which are big enough to form your icy base. You can also grab smaller versions of the trays for £2 (for a pack of two) to add your fruit.

The trick went down well with hundreds of viewers, who branded the hack as ‘such a good idea’. “Wow, mind-blown!” one person raved. Another agreed, commenting: “I am throwing a party tomorrow with my mum so thank you so much.” While a third simply added: “Genius.”
However, sceptics were quick to point out the hack’s biggest flaw, that once the ice melts you’ll be left with a huge tray of water which might overflow due to the weight of the fruit. Viewers from across the pond also dismissed the method – arguing it wouldn’t work in the US. “Nice hack but not in this Texas weather,” one person joked. Another said: “This would last five minutes in Florida.”
