Meghan Markle would have ’caused a media storm’ at Duke of Westminster’s wedding, an expert has claimed after Hugh Grosvenor tied the knot on Friday

Meghan Markle would have “caused a media storm” at the Duke of Westminster’s wedding had she attended, it has been claimed by a royal expert.

Hugh Grosvenor, the 7th Duke of Westminster, is a close friend of both Prince Harry and his brother Prince William. The Duke got married yesterday, with his wedding to Olivia Henson taking place on Friday, June 7.

Both Prince Harry and Meghan missed out on the nuptials of Harry’s close friend the billionaire Duke of Westminster, which took place at Chester Cathedral, with it now claimed that Meghan would have caused a “media storm” had she attended.

It was previously reported that the Duke of Sussex turned down a “save the date” to the wedding to avoid an “awkward” encounter with family members he is no longer close with.

Then, just days before the wedding was due to take place, an American news outlet “confirmed” that Harry definitely was invited to the event after original reports claimed he was the one who was snubbed.

PEOPLE wrote how “there was an acknowledgment on both sides that it would be difficult for Harry to attend”, adding that it was an “understanding between the two friends”, according to a source.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams touched on the Sussexes snubbing the event when he said: “To feel you have no choice but to miss the wedding of the year is very sad.”

He added: “However, the deep rift within the royal family has ensured that Harry and Meghan were never going to accept an invitation to the wedding of Hugh Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster, godfather to Archie and a close friend of Harry.

“They knew William would be there, reportedly as one of the ushers.”

Mr Fitzwilliams then spoke of the “media storm” that Meghan would have caused when he added: “They also knew that their presence would cause a media storm, especially since Meghan has not visited Britain since Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral.”

This comes after royal biographer Ingrid Seward, told The Mirror that it’s likely Meghan wouldn’t have been keen on attending in the first place. She said: “There was also the question of Meghan being unwilling to attend such a high-profile society wedding knowing that most of that very society disliked her. Why would she want to come to a country where she could be pilloried, snubbed and embarrassed?

“Hers and Harry’s presence would certainly have distracted from the bride and groom and even Meghan would know that would be the height of bad manners. Harry issued an unofficial memo saying, ‘The Duke of Sussex sends his love and support and admiration for the couple for their wedding day.'”
