The Duchess of Sussex did not make an appearance at Hugh Grosvenor’s, the Duke of Westminster, wedding in Chester, but it’s thought a royal outfit had a nod to her in her absence

One member of the royal family appeared to give a subtle nod to Meghan Markle at the Duke of Westminster’s wedding, even though she wasn’t present.

Princess Eugenie wore a stylish outfit featuring a sage green silk dress and nude Aquazurra heels, which turned out to be the exact same style that Meghan had worn for her engagement announcement with Harry in 2017. The strappy suede heels, which feature lace up ties, have become an iconic style and Meghan is known for her love of the shoe designer who has also been spotted on other members of the royal family including Princess Beatrice and Princess Kate.

The heels, known as the “Matilde” style, were worn by Meghan as she posed for pictures with Harry to announce their engagement. At the time, Meghan chose to pair hers with a cream wrap coat and green dress. The ‘Matilde’ heels retail for £550 and quickly became a fashion favourite after Meghan wore them for her pictures. Meghan also chose the brand for her evening wedding reception, where she wore wore a pair of white satin heels with a baby blue sole as she was seen stepping out with her husband after their ceremony at Windsor.

Princess Eugenie was one of the few members of the British royal family in attendance at the Duke of Westminster and Olivia Henson’s wedding on Friday in Chester. Prince William also attended, as he took on the role of an usher in the groom party.

Meghan and husband Prince Harry weren’t present at the Duke of Westminster’s big day, as it’s thought the couple didn’t want to attract any drama to the wedding as well as avoiding a potentially awkward run in with Prince William. According to The Times, Harry was invited to Hugh’s wedding, but then over a phone call with the groom agreed to stay away in what is described as a “civilised understanding”. This move in turn cleared the way for William to perform his job as usher at the ceremony, where he was seen entering the Chester cathedral through a side door on Friday.

In another claim, an insider told the New York Post that “Harry actually got a ‘save the date’ card a few months ago but called Hugh and said it would be too awkward if he and Meghan Markle attended, so he made his apologies and Hugh understood.”

Last month, the Sunday Times also reported that Hugh wanted both princes at the wedding but came to an agreement with Harry. A source told the publication: “Hugh is one of the very few close friends of William and Harry’s who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both. He wishes they could put their heads together and patch things up, but realises it’s unlikely to happen before the wedding. He wanted to avoid anything overshadowing the day, especially for Olivia, and doesn’t want any awkwardness.”
