Apple’s new iOS 18 software, which will launch later in the year, has already been mocked after the tech giant raved about a new customisable feature that has existed on Android phones for years

The age-old rivalry of Android vs Apple has fired up once again.

Earlier this week, tech giant Apple revealed its highly-anticipated iOS 18 update at the WorldWide Developers Conference – which will be available to download on certain devices in the autumn. The new software, which is said to be more ‘personal, capable and intelligent than ever’ comes with a bunch of new customisation options.

iPhone users will soon be able to schedule iMessages, send texts via satellite, and ‘lock’ apps for an extra level of security – a feature people say will become a ‘cheater’s paradise’. But one of its biggest updates has tickled Android fans, who say they’ve enjoyed the same feature for years.

“iPhone users have new ways to customise the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Center,” the company said in a statement. “Users can now arrange apps and widgets in any open space on the Home Screen, including placing them right above the dock for easy access or perfectly framing a wallpaper.”

Along with being able to break free from the rigid rows of apps, iPhone users will also be able to edit their icons and widgets with a ‘dark or tinted’ effect. Sound familiar? That’s because both of these customisations are already offered on many Android phones.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), swathes of Android users mocked Apple for only just releasing the feature. “Welcome to 2015, I guess,” one person wrote. Another agreed, commenting: “Someone tell Apple, Android did it first.” A third added: “iOS transformation to Android is finally complete!” While a fourth wrote: “This is so horribly Android, I love and hate it. Thanks, Apple.”

iOS 18 will only be available on certain models of iPhone, iPad and Mac. You can learn more about the new update here.
