A driver has been applauded for teaching an ‘entitled’ motorist a lesson after catching them beeping their horn at a flustered learner driver – as they remind them everyone has to start somewhere

A motorist has been praised for teaching an ‘entitled’ driver a valuable lesson after catching them beeping their horn at a learner.

The driver explained how they were sitting at a red light directly behind a learner driver when the traffic started to build behind them. Unfortunately, the learner driver stalled the car when attempting to pull away when the light turned green, holding up the line for a second sequence. Taking to Reddit, they said: “I pulled up at a set of traffic lights directly behind a learner driver, and another car stopped directly behind me. These lights are notorious in our local area for being very long-winded, and only letting three or four cars through at a time, at most.

“After a minute or so of waiting, our light turned green. The learner driver attempted to pull away and stalled their car. Almost immediately the car behind me started beeping their horn at the delay.” Knowing the learner was likely flustered by the mistake, they made sure to give them enough ‘breathing room’ to correct themselves for the second attempt.

They added: “To be fair to the learner, they applied their handbrake (it’s on a slight hill) restarted the car, and successfully pulled away on their second attempt, just as the light turned back to amber.” Anyone who has learnt to drive knows the feeling of embarrassment and worry that comes with stalling at the lights, so I felt for that person in front and didn’t appreciate the speed at which the person behind started honking their horn.

“I deliberately hung back, rolling ever so slowly forward and crossing the line just as the light turned red, forcing the car behind to have to stop. Looking back in my rearview mirror I could see the other driver gesticulating wildly at me, as I drove on home feeling ever so petty!”

While most users applauded the motorist for having the learner’s back, others slammed the ‘entitled’ car owner for being so impatient. One user said: “We’ve all been learners and stalled, hell I’ve been driving for 20+ years and still manage to stall from time to time, wanna beep me? Prepare to sit behind me doing 20mph until I get bored with it.”

Another user added: “As a driving instructor, I salute you!” A third user said: “This happened to my son yesterday! He had it in third when he tried to pull away and stalled it. Then panicked and shut it off again, started it and almost stalled again when I realised he was in third gear.

“I told him, he again was slow because he’s new, got it into second and we moved. The jerk honking used a left turn lane to speed past us, even though this whole thing was less than 10 seconds. Told my son not to worry about it but he’d better learn where the gears are!”
