A number of popular cars may look like a bargain for used drivers, but one expert has warned that they could end up costing hundreds of pounds in repairs and maintenance
A warning has been issued a warning to motorists to steer clear of three popular used cars that, despite their low price tags, could end up costing a fortune in repairs.
With an increasing number of drivers turning to the second-hand market for their next set of wheels, there are several vehicles, particularly older hatchbacks and superminis, that may appear to be a steal. However, Damian Maginn, director of Wessex Vans, has advised drivers to think twice before purchasing a Vauxhall Corsa manufactured between 2000 and 2006.
He cautioned: “The Vauxhall Corsa is often seen as a popular choice for new drivers due to its compact size and affordability. However, the early models of the Vauxhall Corsa C (2000-2006) come with several drawbacks that make them less ideal for first-time drivers.
“One major issue is the lack of power steering in the base models. Navigating tight corners and parking without power steering can be a daunting task for experienced drivers, let alone new ones, making the driving experience more stressful, physically demanding, and increasing your chances of being involved in an accident.”
The second generation of Vauxhall Corsa sold in the UK, this little supermini was a hit with buyers when it first came out, meaning there’s a plethora of them available on the used car market today. However, besides being poorly equipped compared to other models from the same period, Wessex Vans warned that Corsa Cs don’t fare well in collisions.
Many models do not feature modern safety systems, such as anti-lock brakes (ABS) or Electronic Stability Control (ESC), whilst only the driver and front passenger have airbags. Damian also recommended that motorists who want economic motoring rule out early examples of the Ford Ka, with many featuring a thirsty engine with a history that can be traced back to the 1950s.
He continued: “The Ford Ka, particularly the first-generation model produced from 1996 to 2008, is another car that new drivers might find problematic. While it boasts a quirky design and a small footprint that makes it ideal for city driving, it falls short in terms of fuel efficiency.”
He added: “The older Ford Ka models are notorious for their poor fuel economy, which will lead to higher running costs, especially given that fuel prices are showing no signs of coming down any time soon.”
Finally, Damian warned drivers not to be tempted by low prices for Peugeot 206s thanks to a number of reliability issues that could see new owners having to pay hundreds more than expected, reports the Express. He added: “One of the primary concerns is reliability. The Peugeot 206 is known for its frequent mechanical issues, including problems with the electrical system, gearbox and suspension.
“These issues can lead to frequent and costly repairs, which for new drivers who may not have the funds to cover unexpected maintenance costs, can be an absolute nightmare.”
