‘My job won’t let me take holiday for a wedding – so I’m handing in my notice’

A woman is considering quitting her job so she can attend a family member’s wedding next year, as her boss has told her she won’t be able to take the day off for the ceremony

Would you quit your job just to be able to take one day off?

Holidays and breaks from work life are important for our mental well-being – even if you don’t do anything exciting with your time off and decide to relax at home. Sometimes, you might just want to take the odd day off to attend an event that’s important to you, such as a concert or your child’s school play.

But one woman has claimed her work won’t allow her to use one day of her holiday allowance to attend a family member’s wedding, so she’s taking matters into her own hands – by giving in her notice.

In a post on Mumsnet, the woman said she works in a school which “does not allow time off” for events such as weddings, so she’s been told she can’t take the day off when her “close relative” ties the knot.

That means her only options if she wants to attend the wedding are to either lie about the reason for her holiday request or quit her job. And she’s admitted she’s strongly considering the latter option.

She wrote: “A close relative has decided to get married on a Monday and I work Mondays. My school does not allow time off (even unpaid) for events like this at all, it just isn’t permitted. My options are: 1) Lie – my worry with this is that if I am ‘caught’ the repercussions are serious. Or 2) Resign – If I handed my notice in now, I could leave at Christmas.”

The woman said she doesn’t think she’ll have a problem finding a new teaching job, but she is a little worried as she’s currently part-time and isn’t sure if another part-time post will be advertised that’s suitable for her. She added: “Also getting settled in again somewhere is a pain.”

Commenters on the post were split over the woman’s issue. Many said the school doesn’t sound like a “nice place to work” so she should consider finding a new job regardless. However, others said one wedding isn’t worth quitting her job over.

One person said: “That doesn’t sound like a nice place to work. I would look around for a new job. I know teaching can’t be very flexible but there are situations where it’s important,” while another stated: “I’d just lie.”

But someone else wrote: “Your relative clearly doesn’t care much whether or not you attend if they’ve chosen to get married on a Monday. I certainly wouldn’t quit my job to attend someone’s wedding! That’s ridiculous. And I love weddings.”
