A plane passenger was left baffled when an entitled man ‘screamed’ at them to swap seats in the middle of a flight – and he became ‘apoplectic’ when they refused
Booking a seat in advance of your flight can really take the pressure off your journey – until someone asks you to swap.
Travelling by plane can be exhausting, so many of us will jump at the chance to book a seat in advance. But what would you do if you sat down in your seat and someone asked for a switch?
That’s the dilemma one passenger recently faced when he was confronted by an “entitled drunk passenger” who demanded he get up from his aisle seat and move to a middle one so that he could sit with his friends.
In a post on Reddit, the 30-year-old man said he had booked himself an aisle seat because he’s tall and finds those seats more comfortable. But after boarding the plane, he was approached by a man who was sitting in the middle seat on the row across from him, who asked if they could switch.
The man insisted he only declined the request because he didn’t want to sit in a middle seat, but that reasoning was no good for the other passenger, who became “apoplectic” and began “screaming” when he didn’t get his own way.
He wrote: “After I get into my seat two guys who are friends and have had some drinks sit next to me. A little later another friend of there’s who is clearly wasted shows up and is assigned to the middle seat across the aisle.
“He approaches me and asks if we can switch. I tell him that I don’t mind switching seats but only if it’s for another aisle seat as there is no way I’m sitting in the middle seat. The guy loses his s**t and becomes apoplectic, screaming at me that I’m a f***ing a**hole and telling me to go f**k myself. I just ignore him and he finally sits down.”
The other passenger’s two friends immediately apologised for their mate’s behaviour, but that didn’t stop him from giving the man “dirty looks” for the first half an hour of their flight.
And while the man described the exchange as “pretty childish”, he was thankful when a few hours into the flight the passenger “sobered up” and came over to apologise to him for his earlier behaviour.
Commenters on the post were firmly on the man’s side. Many even praised him for being courteous enough not to call the flight attendants over and have him kicked from the plane for being too drunk to fly.
One person said: “He should have thanked you, considering he could have been banned from using that airline,” while another posted: “The guy should have never been let on the plane. I would have alerted a flight attendant.”
