Carole Middleton and Sarah Ferguson embrace at Tom Kingston’s funeral

Princess Kate’s mum Carole and Sarah Ferguson shared a heartwarming embrace as they attended Tom Kingston’s memorial service in London.

Thomas Kingston, who married Lady Gabriella in 2019, died earlier this year aged just 45, leaving the daughter of Prince Michael of Kent bereaved. The financier died from a “traumatic head wound”, and a gun was found near to his body in an outbuilding at his parents home in the Cotswolds, an inquest opening at Gloucestershire Coroners Court heard. Police said they were satisfied the death was not suspicious.

A memorial service held for Mr Kingston on Saturday saw a number of royal guests, including the Middleton matriarch who hugged Sarah Ferguson outside St Mary Abbots Church in Kensington, where the service was held. Mike Tindall and Zara Phillips were also in attendance, alonside Lady Amelia Windsor. The service commenced around 9.50am.

Steve St Clair, 56, who took a video, said: “It was a bit surreal to see them there – there was no obvious security or press about.”

Steve’s girlfriend Layla Jafari, 48, a travel consultant, even managed to have a quick chat with Mike Tindall. She said: “I went up to Mike Tindall to ask if it was ok to take photos and he said ‘go ahead, you’re getting a lucky picture!'” Steve, a baking consultant, said: “My partner is the Hello reader – I would have walked straight past them without even noticing if she hadn’t spotted them.”

Speaking after the event, a spokesperson for the Kingston family said: “Lady Gabriella and the Kingston family have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love, kindness and support they have received over the past difficult months. They were grateful today for the chance to celebrate – and give thanks for – the life of a wonderful man, among so many of those who knew and loved him too.”

Following the announcement of Mr Kingston’s death in February, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “The King and the Queen have been informed of Thomas’s death and join Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and all those who knew him in grieving a much-loved member of the family. In particular, Their Majesties send their most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Gabriella and to all the Kingston family.”
