In Harry’s tell-all memoir Spare, the prince described an altercation between the brothers at his London residence back in 2019
Prince Harry recounted the three words that he says made his brother so furious he launched a physical attack on him as their relationship fell apart.
In Harry’s tell-all memoir Spare, the prince described an altercation between the royal brothers at his London residence back in 2019. William is said to have called Meghan, who Harry married the year before, “difficult”, “rude”, and “abrasive”. Harry said his brother was simply “parroting” the “narrative[s]” about his wife.
Tensions rose to the point that Harry claims William gripped him by the collar, ripped his necklace and “knocked me to the floor”. Harry says that the tussle lead him to sustain a visible injury on his back. The prince claimed William had come over to speak about “the whole rolling catastrophe” of their relationship. When the Prince of Wales arrived at Nottingham Cottage, known as Nott Cott and in the grounds of Kensington Palace, he was already looking for a row, Harry claims in his book.
He alleged the heir to the throne was not being rational and that the two men then began shouting over each other. The Duke of Sussex write in his memoir thaat William claimed he was trying to help, to which Harry responded: “Are you serious? Help me? Sorry – is that what you call this? Helping me?”
Harry says it was that comment that tipped his brother over the edge. In the book Harry says William swore as he stepped towards his brother, who said he was scared and ran to the kitchen to escape him. Harry said he offered his brother a glass of water and refused to speak to him when he was “like this”.
Harry wrote : “He set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”
William was telling him to hit him back and cited similar fights when they were kids. Harry refused before William returned “looking regretful” and apologised. Harry then told his brother “you attacked me”, to which William replied: “I didn’t attack you, Harold.” Meghan later noticed the “scrapes and bruises” and told her of the attack, but she “wasn’t that surprised” and “wasn’t all that angry. She was terribly sad.”
