Results of the KS2 SAT exams taken by pupils in Year 6 will be released today (Tuesday, July 9). The assessments are used to measure performance at school, and to ensure pupils are being correctly supported, the Department for Education has said.

The exams themselves were taken back in May, with six papers testing children on their English and Maths abilities. SATs is an acronym for Standard Assessment Tests, and the results are scored on a scale of 80-100.

Below, we’ve put together answers to all the questions you might have about the SATs and the results children will be receiving today.

What are SATs?

SATs is an acronym for Standard Assessment Tests, which are designed to make sure children are on track to meet the standards set out by the government in English and Maths. Pupils take English grammar and spelling papers, as well as a reading test.

Then they are tested on their maths skills, including arithmetic and reasoning.

When will the results be released?

Schools will receive KS2 SATs results on Tuesday, July 9.

What does ‘test scaling’ mean?

SATs results are scaled, meaning that the results each pupil gets is converted into a relative score based on all the other children who have taken the test that year. Therefore, this means the results do not include the pupils’ ‘raw’ scores, or the initial tallying up of correct answers.

Instead, the raw scores are converted into scaled scores to ensure that they provide an accurate comparison between pupils, as well as providing a better look at pupil performance over time.

What do SATs scores mean?

A scaled score of 100 or more means a child is working at the expected standard, known as ‘AS‘. However, a score below 100 suggests the pupil hasn’t reached the standard set by the government – this is recorded as ‘NS‘.

The maximum score possible is 120, while the minimum is 80. To meet government expectations, pupils must achieve 100 in their scaled scores.

What is a good SATs score?

A good score is dependent on the individual student and their goals and abilities. But if a child scores above 100, they have exceeded standard expectations.

How do you find SATs results?

Each school will decide how to release SATs scores. For Key Stage 2 (Year 6), schools often send a list of results home with each child’s end of term school report.

The child will then get confirmation of whether they reached the national standard – ‘AS’.
