X users were left in disbelief after hearing who a woman was set to marry in a clip from the first ever episode of ITV show Airline, which originally aired in 1998

A retro TV clip taken from ITV’s Airline has left social media users perplexed and in hysterics after it casually revealed a woman’s intended groom during the show’s first instalment in 1998.

In the episode, a woman is seen looking forward to her daughter’s wedding day as the family gets jets off to the Dominican Republic. But viewers were floored when the narrator revealed the bride was going to wed her cousin.

“Sorry, what?” quipped an X (formerly Twitter) user, taken aback by the startling revelation in the old clip. She then expressed her surprise with the caption: “Watched the very first episode of Airline earlier and couldn’t quite believe my ears.”

Others expressed their shock at the forthcoming nuptials, with one person commenting: “Watched exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely stunning and it only gets better as it goes on.” A second echoed the disbelief, saying: “I thought I heard something completely different at the beginning there…..and then it hit at the end.”

A third was curious about the post-wedding developments: “We need a life update immediately, what do the kids look like.” Meanwhile, a fourth took a humorous jab at the narration: “Even though Charlie Higson is narrating this… it genuinely feels like a Fast Show [90s BBC sketch show] episode.”

In an attempt to bring a sense of normalcy to the conversation, however, one individual remarked: “Cousin marriage is close to 50% in some communities.” Whilst a second shared a personal anecdote: “My mum’s auntie is married to her first cousin and they have a daughter.”

The documentary series Airline, created by LWT, offered viewers a glimpse into the everyday experiences of passengers, ground staff, and flight crew at Britannia Airways. From the second series, the focus shifted to include the operations at EasyJet.
